With So Many Food Recalls, Are You Getting A Bit Wary Of What To Eat??

In the past year or so, we've seen so many food recalls due to contamination, especially e. coli and salmonella, it's not funny, but the pace of recalled foods seems to have gotten even faster within the past few months. Honestly I'm beginning to wonder, like what the heck is going on, and what the heck do we eat now?? For instance, I happen to be a spinach lover, but ever since the spinach recalls, I swear I haven't eaten any since, since like, duh, how do we know it can't happen again? Now, it's been a certain brand of pizza, particularly the pepperoni kinds, but how safe is pepperoni for instance on ANY brand of pizza?? And even if you were to make your own pizza (which I've done from scratch) is that package of Hormel Pepperoni safe?? Maybe I'm more wary too, since a few years ago, I did have food poisoning, and believe me, this isn't something you want to get. The "memory" of my bout with it still lingers to this day. So are you like me? Are you more wary of getting certain kinds of food now, especially ones that have in the past been recalled, like spinach, lettuce, blueberries, strawberries, pizza, and on and on? Also what is frustrating, these recalls seem to effect the whole scope of foods, that is, fresh, frozen or canned.

I believe that the whole issue speaks to a lapse of judgment on behalf of the food handlers and gatherers, pyewacket. I know that where there used to be stringent laws in place regarding people who work int he food industry, it is not so today. I have been in fast-food restaurants where some of the workers looked so unkempt that I wouldn't dare eat anything from the place. I am sure that in other areas where people handle food it is just as bad. The FDA will only say that they are understaffed and a lot of undesirable items go through undetected. It should be handled on local levels where each state should have guidelines in place and make sure they are followed to the letter.

I am just listening to a radio show where they are talking about this very issue. The host blames much of it on the fact that they have done away with so many of the laws regarding what happens to our food. He said that we no longer even know where our food comes from-which is true. Also, he said that human manure is used to grow some vegetables in places like Mexico, ugh. I think I want to stop eating altogether.

Human waste, called sludge, is widely used to grow a wide variety of crops. It's treated b4 it leaves the plant so as not to contaminate our ground water and such. Perfectly safe but rather yucky to think about. I grow all my veges in almost straight horse manure this year and I've had alot of ppl rave how much tastier and bigger they are compared to store-bought and even from other vege stands. Some are grossed out by it when I tell them what they grew in but ppl that are in the know, know animal/human waste, right along with compost, is the best natural fertilizer for all kinds of plants.

Yes, a lot of our foods do come from other countries like South America, Mexico, etc. where the safety standards are way below our standards. I heard even the water that is used to irrigate crops is contaminated, so those foods are absorbing the contaminated water as well. Yeesh. The problem is in away our fault. We've gotten so used to eating any kind of food whether it's in season or not, that's why we're importing so many foods where the climate is more ideal to grow year round.

My mother and I were talking about this just about an hour ago. It amazes her that this can happen (of course she's 82 and doesn't really understand it all any way). It's getting so no matter what we buy we will probably hear something about it on the news a day or two later. It's scary!

I never remember so many food recalls when I was growing up. Come to think of it, I don't remember any at all, do you??

It is getting really scary. But I guess I've come to the point that I've got to eat and if I can't grow it I will just have to try not to think about it and eat anyway. I just try to stay away from the things that are on recall, pray, and hope for the best. Cause I would drive myself nuts in worry.

It seems we're not safe anymore because people have become so careless or there's more of them becoming careless in which are putting others lives in danger. It's really sad because it all boils down to the almighty dollar. I pray I never lose sight of what's more important which is life itself.

I think our society has gotten lazy and careless and cuts corners to produce less quality foods but charge the same money. I never remember hearing recalls of food when I was growing up

Where did Montel get that info that the world as we know it would end precisely on Dec 21 2012?? That's creepy. I do tend to wonder about predictions. Oh, I do listen to them, thing is Edgar Cayce one of the big time psychics in the 1930 and 1940s predicted the earth changes would occur before the late 1990s...didn't--said Atlantis would rise again then ( I DO happen to be an Atlantean believer) so I was disappointed when the time came and went and nothing happened :( But a lot of psychics do seem to point to 2012 as a critical time even the psychic Sylvia Browne...yeesh. Hehe...if it IS true about this, heck maybe we should all just have one big humdinger of a party until then..LOL

Neither did I but then there was a lot to learn about contamination and cross contamination and so on. In today's society, most aren't taught the value of life or the value of a dollar except for what it can do for them. It's a sad sad world that's for sure. I heard on Montel that on Dec 21st 2012 the world as we know it is going to end because the earth is going to tilt something like 45 degrees or something like that and it's going to cause volcanos to erupt and all sorts of other things which is fire being created so if that's true, we've only got 5 years to live in this world as we know it. Beyond that, it's going to be pure hell to find food. I pray that it's not true but with predictions of this study makes me cringe big time. I'm not totally believing it but it does make me wonder though. I can't doubt everything because what IF it were true? I guess I'm too open minded or I have too much blonde in my head! LOL

I'm just hoping that maybe some foods that are tainted and should be recalled aren't being recalled and are kept mum--how do we know??

It is getting scary to buy anything. It seems that there are so many recalls. You are at their mercy. My grandma always said that if they ever wanted to reduce the population, or someone wanted to get even with us, it would be through the food industry or water. It seems she may be right.

That's a scary thought...yes, a real good form of "terrorism" would be to do something with the water...think of all the uses we have...not only drink but cook with

we might need to look in to run the places that all the recalls are from for it seems to me like alot started from CHina is there a way to find if the plants are china owned!? So sorry if any chinese people oon here dont mean to offend but the wheat thing that came from China seemd to start the whole thing. and it has speeded up since then from dog food to popele food.

Well the past few recalls had nothing to do with food imported from China. The Topps brand frozen burgers that were recalled were made in a plant in New Jersey. As for the pizzas? They're made here in the US too I think

Yes, I am weary of what I buy anymore. I commented to my husband recently that I buy more name brands now than before. Walmart generics are not worth the pennies you save. I still buy some generics, but not like before. And the milk...found out walmart was putting in hormones that have probably had something to do with my daughter's PCOS (polycystic ovarian disease)and her starting her menses early on and them being messed up. More than one female in my family has had problems (female related). Everytime I pick something up I am wondering if I am going to get food poisoning or not. I too have had it before, and will never forget it, never!! I'm glad you brought this subject up, I think recalls are just beginning. What's going on to cause all this, I do not know. But the gov't needs to beef up security and testing for all companies before it's too late.

Yikes. You realize how many hormones or antibiotics are given to farm raised animals. No wonder our antibiotics don't work for us anymore or they have to keep making stronger ones when we have an illness. Thing is, it's not just generic brands to be careful about. The Topps frozen burgers is a name brand, and they were recalled and many were sold in Walmart. So you had food poisoning too? Lovely isn't it? NOT! I got mine from fish I had eaten. Do you know I'm still a bit squeamish about eating fish, and I love fish!!

Sorry to hear about your food poisoning, pyewacket. I've had food poisoning lots of times but it's never really bad. After throwing up and/or diahhrea, I feel better. Never gotten worse than that and it's only cause I'm careless with the food I eat myself on occassion. Like leaving cooked meat out all night and eating it the next morning, for example. Still, it doesn't stop me from eating foods that have been contaminated. Still love my spinach and pizza.

I guess the way things are nowadays one is taking chances in eating anything at all, since you never might know if it's contaminated

I never pay attention to that stuff. I have enough to worry about without adding any more to my list. I just ignore everything on the news, the war, politics, all of it. I am hapier to just live my life in ignorance. TOo much depressing stuff these days. As for food, I can't say that I have ever had food poisoning, but I leave that all in God's hands and my immune system. I eat things off the floor, I don't always wash my veggies before eating them, and I eat/drink after my cats. I'm not concerned about getting sick. I have never had a serious illness and I feel my immune system will take care of me. Life is too short to have to worry about everything. Have you some spinach pye!! Now that this was a problem, it opens eyes and strengthen regualtions on product safety, so I wouldn't worry about it. I had some spinach dip that was SO GOOD!!!!
