Apparently the story continues to get deeper and deeper for the Bush Administration. A former Deputy Assistant Attorney General, whose job it was to assess what practices constitute torture voluntarily subjected himself to torture. Daniel Levin came back with his report that it was indeed torture and was promptly fired from his position. Does that change anyone's mind here who thought it was an OK thing to do?

Uh Annie, is this one a double post too? Maybe its just me getting senile over here. *shakes head* Nevermind.
While it is the prerogative of the Administration, I'd still like to see the full report and story on this. Just like another discussion you had, I do feel as if something is missing from the puzzle. I'll have to look further into this situation. If I find anything I'll respond to one of your threads on this.

No, you're not getting senile but it's not a double post. I started a discussion about whether water boarding was torture then I started this one after hearing about the fired Justice employee who was fired after it was discovered he intended to report that, after undergoing the procedure, he believed it was torture.

I think she wins the discussion. :D
My friends keep saying that during some of our gaming too, so I'm twice as tickled.
Just had to admit it and show love.

What Transdisc brilliantly said, this doesn't really change my mind because I already think it's torture lol.
Yup. He went against the opinion they settled on, so they're all "Okay, that dude has to go."
And yeah..he was only doing his job.
I'm glad he had the courage to speak up though. It was awesome to see him on tv ^_^

Nope. Again , I've done it and though it is far from fun or pleasant, it is still hardly torture. Scary if you don't know what's happening, even unsettling (especialy if our not drunk like we were, lol) but NOT torture.
While I agrea that being fired for voicing your opinion (if there isn't more to that story), is wrong and should be looked in to, I still cannot call this torture.

When you did it, who administered it? Were you tied down and your face completely covered? I don't think there needs to be much "more to the story" of this firing, it's just more of what we should have come to expect of this Administration by now.

2 held me down, a third stuffed one wash cloth in my mouth, and another was lain over my face, he then turned a garden hose on my face. Again I will say it was anything but pleasant, the other guys said the same thing, 3 of us tried, the forth opted out. All told when ou ou put it in perspective with the means used by less civilized nations and groups, were pretty easy on people. I'm not saying we shouldn't always be vigilant, and watchful, and never should we treat our prisoners as others treat ours, but with out at least some kind of rough stuff, we look less and less like a force to be rconed with and more and more like a "paper tiger" as one group's leader called us. Thisa applies to our interogation, our military action, and even our diplomatic effort. Reagan, was very diplomatic with the soviet union in negotiations, but he negotiated with thousands of nuclear tipped missles behind him. Theaodore roosavelt ( I think it was him anyway), always said speak softly, but carry a big stick. you can carry the biggest stick in the world and if no one believes you will use the stick when you have to and just wave it instead, then it does no good to have it and all you have left is a lot of soft talking, Yes, I want to be intimidating. I WANT the world to fear our military. I WANT people to be afraid to attack us. I TRULY WANT someone to think about all of this when the consider joining a group that would attack or otherwise try to bring harm to me or my country. Our security problems don't stem from us becomming to bold in the world, the have risen because we became a nation of wimps.

Okay, a person goes through the water-boarding thing, gives a report that it was indeed torture and got fired?! That was his job and he was only doing it. That is totally unfair for that guy and I think he should get his job back because he was only doing what he thought was right.

It doesn't suprise me he was fired. Nothing about this administration has been honest. The information that they had to go to war had wholes all in it and they knew it, but this administration wanted to go to war regardless of the lives that were lost. I just saw a 60 minutes report last night that made me so made about it. I'm not trying to change the subject... I'm just saying it doesn't suprise me.

Congress did not beleive him because they could have outlawed it twice and choose not to. It is much easier to ciritze than it is to come up with a plan. What is your answer to get information from a KNOWN terriorist. If you child was visiting Chicago and we knew that a major Midwesteern city was the target of a dirty bomb how far would you go to get the information???

Congress didn't "not believe" him because they never got his report - he was fired! The question is, if we say we "do not torture" how do we define torture? Or should we just go ahead and do whatever we choose to suspects and not worry about the consequences to our own people? If we're going to torture let's say so but if we're not going to let's not be afraid to give a clear definition of what torture is!
