I had a dish today that I have been craving for at least a month. They are called chitterlings. They are very popular among the black population(except for some who think they are above them). They are a pork product and usually boiled for several hours, seasoned with salt and pepper, served with coleslaw and cornbread on the side. Many people also like collard greens along with them. They are very delicious! Do any of you have an ethnic favorite food that might sound strange to others?

Well I don't know if it would be classified as "strange" but since I live in the north a lot of Southern style foods aren't known or popular here. Sometime ago, I introduced myself to catfish served with homemade hush puppies (could never figure how they got that name) One does have to go out of one's way to find catfish here in the north as it isn't a popular fish to buy, not like flounder or sole, and forget hush puppies. NO one has heard of them hear. But I do make them whenever I have the catfish.

My mother used to be crazy about catfish, pyewacket. I am not a big fish eater, but I do like ocean perch. Cod is great also. I grew up in Tennessee where hush puppies were ordinary fare. I really love them, but can only find them at Long John Silver's where I now live. I have never tried to make them myself. Do you have a good recipe?

Actually, hoghoney, that is what we call them too. I was just using the polite pronunciation.[smile] The ones I got today were ordered from a restaurant, but my daughter is going to cook some for Thanksgiving. I just couldn't wait that darn long!

Chitterlings doesn't sound very strange, I'm rather partil to pork and had it for dinner tonight...left over roast, heated with the gravy and served wth mashed potato and I had peas, corn and broad beans. Apple sauce too...yum.
The strangest thing I can think of is chicken giblets. My second husband was Italian (still is I guess), he would cook the giblets with finely chopped onion and garlic and some diced tomato with plenty of salt and pepper.. They were yummy.

I love a lot of ethnic foods like "poke" made from very ripe bananas, boiled and other ingredients added and eaten with coconut cream http://www.ck/food/0109.htm);
mayonnaise which is a potato salad dish made at all Cook Island gatherings (http://www.cinews.co.ck/Cooksinfo/recipes.htm#mayonnaise); palusami (http://www.geocities.com/adams_dhanjal/recipes/palusami.htm) and chop suey (http://www.sugarcaneshack.com/Page7.html). Those are the type of ethnic foods I love to eat!

I love blintzes, a crepe filled with cheese and raisins from Israel.. Very tasty, unfortunately, I am the only one in my family that like them, so I have to downside the amount I make..:)
