Woohoo...another food recall! And this one's near me.

I've just now given up red meat. I love it but I'm done. The plant that is 10-15 miles from my house just recalled a bunch of meat. Here's the link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071103/ts_nm/cargill_beef_recall_dc
I'm just going to grow a big garden next spring, maybe buy some laying hens and quit buying food from the store. Then if I die of food poisoning it will be my own fault.
Any one else so tired of the recalls it's almost funny?

The scary thing is, people will get so tired of the recalls that they'll start ignoring them...think about New Orleans and how they learned the hard way about ignoring all the hurricane warnings.
It's not going to end until the system changes. Obviously whatever is in place now is no longer working.
But here's another point...this one is for an e coli conamination. E-coli can be killed by proper cooking so the question is, are we really talking about bad meat or lazy people who can't follow cooking directions?

I do PREFER a little pink but I'm not stupid enogh to do it with ground meats :). The good steaks are supposed to be safe that way though.
I am glad that these companies issue recalls when thee is a problem BUT I don't see how it's their responsibility to protect people who won't cook their meat properly.

Yes I am, I have been dreaming of my own farm and growing/raising my own food which I believe will be not only safer, but better without pestisides..

I am so glad I'm not the only one...s/o isn't interested in the amimal part of it but it looks like we are buying his parents' place so we'll have a decent amount of land...a few acres anyway. There's alrady a pretty nice sized garden spot...although it neds a little work to be an organic garden. I plan on expanding that some so hopefully we won't need any store bought vegetables. I'm also wanting to do pumpkins and watermelons in another area of the land and am serious about getting chickens for eggs. I'd love a cow for milk but I'm not sure I want to do the milkng lol!

LOL -that's the one benefit to living in the middle of nowhere. You can do whatever you want and the "neighbors" are too far away to see or care.

Wow, that sounds like a good thing..:) I can only do the gardening where I am, I have the land, but it is in a gated community, don't think they would appreciate chickens..lol

You know, we take it for granted that our stuff is safe and that someone is watching out for us. It makes you wonder if now the companies are voluntarily taking more care and watching out more and making sure things are clean and done right. What were they doing before?

I do completely agree with you. I can't speak for other places but I know this place is doing the same (roughly) testing that they did 5-10 years ago. My (now ex) hubby worked there while we were married and they had all these safety checks in place then too.

1 million pounds!! omg! hmm i dont get my groceries from any of the stores listed that carry that brand..thankfully! its getting to the point where everything i buy, whether toy or food or makeup for that matter, is gonna be on the news saying its making ppl sick!
i dont understand why we are suddenly having this huge flood of recalls! is it the companies that are recently (last few years) cutting corners or has this been going on for a long time and someone somewhere is just starting to take notice??

We used to have a little one like that too where I grew up. I remember going there with my mom and watching while our ground beef came out of the machine and into the package for us to take home.

There was a time when ALL of my beef came from that place. My ex-hubby worked there and we got a company discount (back when it was still family owned not part of a national company). I couldn't count the number of times he brought meat home just as fresh as possible and we ate it right away. We never even gave any thought to the testing and how long it takes to know for sure the meat was safe.
I think all the problems have always been there. We've probably always eaten food that was contaminated with something or another. The difference is now we have all of this testing to know what it is and because of a lawsuit happy society the companies feel they have to tell us everytime, no matter how small the risk, to protect their hide if someone does get sick.

Sigh...
I'm with you Foxy. Here goes some fun reading for thought.
Ground Round - Inspected by the US FDA
Ground Chuck - Inspected by the US FDA
Ground Pork product - Inspected by the Dept of Agriculture
etc, and so forth...
Okay...
Now, is it just me or does something REALLY not look right here? Too many recalls, too many safety problems. BOTH the producers and the federal government are supposed to be responsible for checking this (goes back to the late 1920s or so). Maybe I should go back to the How do We FIX It(government) thread and change the agriculture section to "full revamp" instead of "audit and check".
Or it could be the other side of the equation. People not cooking their food right then crying to the government they got sick. If its that, then the rest of us are suffering because some idiot can't hit 3 minutes on a microwave for a pizza, or cook a burger 3 on each side at least. Guh!!
I just say to everyone, take care and watch out.
Be safe.

There probably does need to be a "full revamp" along with more education on safe meat handling. I would guess the problems are a mix of both government incompetance and consumer incompetance.
It's simple common sense to cook meat properly, if people don't have common sense it's not the meat companies' fault.

It really does make you wonder! The testing for this particular thing takes so long to come back that the affected meat had a "use by" stamp dated just one day after the recall was announced so I'm sure much of it was consumed already. The rest is probably in freezers without the original packaging and will be consumed at a later date. All we can really hope for is that it all gets cooked properly.
