All of the recalls aren't the only problem

"The Food and Drug Administration, which is part of the Health and Human Services Department, oversees the regulation of medical devices and more than $1 trillion annually worth of food, drugs, cosmetics, animal feed and other products, which account for 25 cents of every dollar spent each year by Americans." But they don't have the authority to order a mandatory recall of unsafe products! They can urge the company involved to do it to avoid bad publicity! And the Consumer Product Safety Commission and head Nancy Nord, which oversees the safety of consumer products, has been criticized recently for all of recalls of the toys made in China. She has been criticized for not acting more quickly. BUT! They don't have the authority to order mandatory recalls either! They can only urge the company involved...sound familiar? What is the deal? Why are we as a country always trying to get something done "after the fact" and blaming the one in charge when they have no power to do the job required? That is just crazy!

For years we as a nation have wanted less involvement in our lives. Now we have cameras watching us and people with the ability to tap phones. We base our country on honesty and trust. Unfortunately other countries do not honor that code nor do they care just as long as we are willing to buy their products. It is unfortunate that we will have to change the way our country does things. This is going to yet again increase the cost of government. We need to do something. But I have two questions. Is government oversite accurate? Are government standards high enough. Some independent testers and labs have higher standards? In that regard I agree that something must be done. We will need more testers to test more things which will cost more money and create a bigger federal bureaucacy which if it works like the rest of the governemnt will be impotent. What are we to do?

If the FDA can't order a recall why doesn't the government give them the ability to do so? That makes no sense to me at all. They are the ones who know what should or should not be on our shelves so it they should have that option. Makes me so proud to be a US citizen...lol...

I'm not trying to sound racist, but maybe we should quit buying our toys from China. I think we've had enough scares. I am unclear as to why there can't be mandatory toy or any other kind of recall.
