Stupidity Kills!

Here is proof that stupidity DOES kill. There is a thing called The Darwin Awards.they give out awards to people who died from pure stupidity or as the site headliner says: Honoring those who improve the species...by accidentally removing themselves from it! Here is the link and one story from the site. http://www.darwinawards.com/ (27 July 2007, Guadalajara, Mexico) A sure winner is an elevator accident in the hotel I work for. I found the media reference, and could not resist the temptation of sharing this story with you. Apparently 24-year-old Jessica was not familiar with the use of the telephone or the use of the stairs. She was working out in the ?Provincia Gym? and realised she needed something from the floor below. Instead of picking up the phone, using the intercom, or just walking downstairs, she decided that the open shaft of the industrial lift was the communications device for her. So Jessica stuck her head into the empty shaft to shout to the people downstairs, but somehow missed noticing the elevator was going UP. Since an elevator cage and a skull are both solid objects, one had to give. Well, let's leave it at saying that the elevator won. If the elevator was going down, one could say that she was in no position to observe the approaching lift, since she was yelling at people below her. But, leaving aside the stupidity of sticking your head into an elevator shaft, if she was looking down, how could she miss the mass of metal headed her way? I?m sure she will be missed by her family, but not by the gene pool.

Ouch...! Maybe it was one of those elevators that travels really fast and she timed it just as the elevator hit her head? Even still, you got to feel sorry for her. I hate the thought of having had missed all the fun I've had since I was 24. Why, I would not even have gotten to play on myLot!

LOL Well sticking your head anywhere, where there could be a fast moving object coming at you is pretty stupid in my book.

Well, now that you bring it up, I guess it is sort of like playing on the freeway, camping at the artillery practice range, racing a train to the railroad crossing or somthing like that.

Oh, one of my friends has some of the books related to the Darwin awards! They are quite entrancing actually, I'm sad to say. I just get way too intrigued by the ridiculous ways in which these people die.

Uh..what century was Jessica living in that she didn't know how to use a phone? Or see that elevator coming up?..LOL Ekk..you were rather descriptive here of how she met her end, but yes she really does deserve the stupidity award.

I would never think otherwise. I mean, that stupidity didn't kill. It's quite obvious that it does. However, it's more common sense than anything and obviously that particular girl didn't have any. I have heard of the darwinawards before but had forgotten about it. Thanks for reminding me!

I just heard about them for the first time a few days ago. I know a few people who will probably end up there if they keep going on the path they do.

I would think you could hear or see it coming. Industrial lifts are quite noisey from my experience.

i think i've seen a movie quite related to that wherein they were all stucked into an elevator.her colleagues tried to open the door and the woman stucked her head out when the elevator suddenly traveled so she also missed her head.but at least that's only a movie.it's terrible when it's for real!

Sorry to be cruel but I found your final sentence "I'm sure she will be missed by her family, but not by the gene pool" to be hilarious.

Weird and a little sick. And even though some of the past darwinaward entries were hoaxes (at least that's what a couple of friends were claiming) the stories are still something, fake or not. Nonetheless, be careful everyone!

I'm sure some stories are fake, but from what I read they check for authenticity.
