OK...SO....my kids and I as of late have been noticing that ppl tend to pronounce the words Schedule and Ask - shedule and axe....This drives the three of us absolutely bonkers...In fact my daughter and I went off on a rant together the other day about the misprounounciation of Schedule....and she came up with
"well you don't say School 'shool'!" and shes absolutely right LOL so why is it ppl do it? And dont even get me started on the whole "ask = axe" thing cause thats drove me nutty for yrs!!!
them - "let me 'axe' you something"
me - "um no thanks I'd rather you didnt AXE anything for me BUT if you would like to ASK me something please feel free"

Well my first language is spanish so when I say "ask" it sounds like ax/axe. What I say is whatever. America only exist because of 'foreign' people! America is a foreign land. Americans don't even speak proper English - just ask the people in England.

LOL omg I've heard the "proper English" speech so many times from my mother (she's from England) its not even funny....I'm not talking about ppl who have English as a SECOND language though, I'm talking about ppl who have English as a FIRST language...There is definately a difference and an understandable one when one's natural tongue is foreign...

Good :-) I'm glad you know and understand there's a difference.
I remember I was once working as a receptionist and the boss came and told me that she wanted to me to start saying "Can I tell her/him who is calling" instead of saying "Can I ask (ax) who's calling". I told her no and if she had a problem with my speaking she could answer the phone herself...I left during lunch and didn't return!

I completely understand what you mean. Here they seem like they can not pronounce the letter H. They say haytch not ach. So when my kids came home from school and saying the alphabet they would pronounce the letter wrong. I would always correct them and it would drive me nuts. When they learned words it was ouse, ome, eart, ope, ow, etc... just add an h to those. Grrrrr. Never mind garage, aunt, or car. To me just just sounds like you are uneducated in my opinion.

"ouse, ome, eart, ope, ow"
LOL that I'm use to just from all the French ppl in the town I grew up in and actually all the New Brunswick and Newfoundlanders too come to think of...And actually from a few friends and family that are from the islands too....often the "h" isnt pronounced so "him" would be "im" etc

LMFAO!!!
OH my! I am SO with you and your daughter on this!!!
That has always drove me bananas too!!!
Luckily people around here don't actually say schedule like that.
Though some do say axe instead of ask...not to mention a lot of other mispronunciations as I like if Kentucky (like pillar for pillow and winder for window!)

I am so please you can only read it when I say as I do say it with the British pronunciation: The usual British pronunciation is [shed-youl, but the US pronunciation [sked-youl] is increasingly heard in Britain http://www.tiscali.co.uk/reference/dictionaries/english/data/d0082757.html
I never say axe, when I first heard that used I thought I was going to get my head chopped off.
Why do people say "garaage" long "aaas: for garage but then say garbage and not garbaaage?!!
