Hi. Huskies LOVE to RUN. It is a natural thing for them. Although a handsome breed, you may want to reconsider...two wonderful breeds around kids are Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. Goldens are not exactly great watchdogs but will basically let a kid pull an ear, tail, lay on them. They are gentle and loyal. You love a dog and treat them well and they really will be your best friend. I also had a friend who had an Alaskan Malumute who attacked his small child when she was too near his food dish. I am not saying they are all like that but I don't believe Huskies are as geared towards families as some other breeds.

That is the reason I got rid of my Siberian Husky because you couldn't go near her while she was eating and she just because to aggressive after giving birth and losing her pups that she just started attacking anyone but me. I believe that collies, labs, and golden retrievers to be the best kids dogs they are that are always gentle with children. Also Big dogs like Alaskan Huskies tend to eat alot more then the other dogs because they seem to be more active and burn more energy and seem to always be hungry.

I've never heard of an alaskan Husky (i only know of Siberian Husky's & Alaskan Malamutes so maybe these differ) but i have heard that although they train well, they're wanderers at heart & can be a little snappy with kids! I don't think there's any such thing as a SAFE dog with kids, you'd never leave them alone together no matter how sweet or well behaved they are anyway. Try something like a labradore or retriever maybe, you could always go with a British Bulldog (not big but EXCELLENT with kids) or maybe you could look in to a smaller breed, something like a fox terrier or jack russell, full of energy for a child but also very good with them as well! Good Luck!

Most dogs who are raised around children will learn to accept them, but some breeds are known to be especially fond of children. Retriever breeds, especially the Golden and Labrador, are big dogs that are gentle with children. Boxers like kids but they are high-energy dogs and need strict training. And Beagles are sweet little dogs for kids but tend to bark a lot! A well-socialized German Shepherd also makes a great pet for older kids. Guard dog and working dog breeds (like the Husky) can be good pets but have a tendency toward aggression and should be supervised when they are around children.
