They believe he has a possible neurofibroma on his C6 vertebrae. I've tried a few searches online to get a little more information to be prepared ahead of time but everything seems pretty vague. Basically, from what I gather, a neurofibroma is a tumor or growth that affects nerves. His happens to be located on his spinal cord where it goes up into his neck.(if that is what his problem is)
Sometimes these "growths" can be removed if the nerve function won't be compomised (like on small, minor nerves not the spinal cord itself). Sometimes they grow quite large and compress the nerves. They also sometimes become cancerous.
From what I'm hearing so far his is not removeable without causing severe permanent damage. Since if he does have this in that location removing it would cause him to be paralized from the neck down...but not removing it could also cause that if his spinal cord beomes compressed as the tumor grows. Or it could become cancerous which won't be good either.
He's only 17 and just barely getting started in life. He's got a nice girlfriend and plans for his future....but now, it's all one big question mark. His dad (my s/o) has distanced himself from all of it until he knows for sure what will happen. He says he can't handle the stress of worrying about something in case it turns out there's nothing to worry about. I'm hoping that's the case too but I needed to share this with all of you. I know I can count on my mylot friends to offer support and advice.

Hugs foxyfire! I hope the MRI went well 5 days ago - sorry this is late. I will keep your son in my prayers :)

He said the MRI itself was fine and went quickly. The results were supposed to be forwarded to his primary physician and she is supposed to be calling us with the results any day now. Thanks so much for the prayers.

Hey there foxyfire. I'm praying for your step son. How did the MRI go? When do you get the results? Poor guy.

Thanks for the prayers! We of ourse don't know anything yet, I kind of figured it would be like this. They said it would take a couple days for his doctor to review it and then she would call him. So we probably won't hear until next week but his doctor does know us all really well so she might get right on it knowing that we have enough to deal with without adding on several days of waiting on this. I'll probably start a whole new discussion when we do get the results to make it easier to update everyone.
