Has anyone ever been accused of being agoriphobic?

My friends all think I am. I really don't think I am. I go fishing. I go food shopping twice a month. I go to my kid's school when ever it is requested. I'm even going to the Monster Truck Rally next weekend. What else do they want? I try to explain to them that I am afraid in crouds but, they just don't get it. I was so happy to move out here in the middle of the woods in my small little neighborhood. I can't help it if I never want to leave and face the big city. I'm a country girl from very southern Mississippi and I just love staying here in my little safe place I found in Florida. Agoriphobic.....I think not.

Agoraphobia is a panic disorder. It isn't about not wanting to go out or fearing crowds. It is about being unreasonably afraid of going out to the point of staying in when going out is warranted. I, too, can be very happy staying at home for days on end now that we have a home I really love. But I'm not afraid to go out. I might just not feel like going out for days on end. Maybe your friends just want a pal to go out with them and rather than thinking it is possible that you can get along without them, they need to pin a label on you to explain to themselves why solitude is preferable to their scintillating company. It is like with people who ask me, "Why don't you answer your phone?" It is pretty simple! Because I don't wish to talk to anyone!

Thanks. I feel much better now. You are right. I live in the perfect little trailer on the perfect little land in the perfect little neighborhood with the perfect little dirt roads. I never want to leave. I hate to shop and I hate to talk on the phone. I always tell my friends when they call, "why don't you just come over instead?"

Okay, so I'm thinking then that agoriphobic is not being able to get out of the house much??? I've been told the same as you. Don't know why really, just because I don't like crowds, I can stay at home for days and days. Let me see, I have a hard time shopping by myself, driving by myself, walking outside by myself, I hate picking up the phone . . . hehehehe. Mmmmm, maybe they're onto something. I just think I'm a country girl. We're fine. Hopefully.

No you don't sound agoriphobic to me. I, too, am a very quiet person and tend to hermatize myself a bit. Still, I get out and do what needs to be done and I get out and do quiet things. If you are happy with your life, then don't worry about what others think.

You're right. I feel much better now. Just because I don't want to leave my house and go to the mall with them to look at a bunch of crap I can't afford to buy anyway doesn't mean that I have a problem. I'd just rather stay home and listen for an eagle so that I can look up and see him. Or maybe a blue heron will drop by today and catch a fish from my pond. I wouldn't want to miss that. I love it here.

i don't see you being agoriphobic at all.i mean some of us just like to stay at home more because why bother go to all those crazy place where we can't have any fun because they all take money.so if we don't have it we can stay at home for free and have much fun there.and yes we are safer at home too.pattie

Exactly! Best response! How can going shopping with your friends be any fun when you have no money to buy anything? I hate shopping. It always makes me feel guilty when I buy something that I didn't REALLY need. I also am weird about leaving my little neighborhood where everything is safe. I do leave when I have to but, I have to admit, I don't really like it. Thanks for your response.

I think your not agoriphobic. You just want to go to places and stay at home whenever it pleases you. People just think negatively of a person who prefer to stay home. We ought not to be bother by them. As long as we enjoy staying at home or going out, we shouldn't be bother by their criticism.

Your right. They probably just say those mean things because, they themselves don't want to go somewhere alone. When I don't want to go with them and choose to stay home instead, they get mad.

I've always admired people like you that could stay in the house for a few days and get things done. I am the complete opposite and am always on the run or having to go somewhere that it could literally be days before I come home again, that may also be in part that I don't have kids so there's no real responsibility for me. But If I stay in the house for a few hours at a time I start to feel suffocated like I need to at least go out for a drive. Today for example it is 2:30 and I have to go to work at 5, and actually look forward to leaving the house because I am starting to go nuts and feel unproductive.

A lot of people don't like crowds but that doesn't make them agoraphobic. Usually people with that phobia don't even want to leave the house! Doesn't sound to me like you have any real problem leaving your home to do things you enjoy! I am a homebody, too. Nothing wrong with that.
