How long is your longest relationship with a friend?

United States

I have always considered myself a good friend to have and have many long-term friendships. My oldest friendship started in elementary school and continues to this day. Rarely will a whole month pass before we get in touch with each other. Some of my friends have passed away so that affects my numbers tremendously. My longest friendship has been for 30 years. What is the longest time you have invested in a friendship? Not a couple-type, but the best friend type.

My longest is for 20 years. I was three when we meet and it was in kinder garden. She was cute girl and I wanted to play with her, because she had this cute doll.LOL Then we went together to elemntary school. But to high school each of us went other way, but we still stayed friends. Now I am in usa , she is in europe but we still keep in touch. we would talk on the phone, write each other and think about each other. I miss her so much.

Thanks for your response. How often do you get in touch with each other, and when you do make contact, how long do you spend on the phone with her?

I actually incur the expense with unlimited long distance on my telephone service. It costs $25 a month, but with all of my family living out of state, I save bundles of money, especially during the holidays!

Rotation of friends? I guess it would be like circulating through the "groups" in high school. I was guilty of not belonging to a clique when I was in school because I would visit each group of friends everyday, circulating through them throughout the day. Similar? Thanks for making me think!

The friends I have right now are still the one's whom I sued to be with during my younger days, I believe our bonds are too strong that we cannot deny the fact that we look at each other as brothers. Infact, we even god-fathered each other's kids, to keep the closeness and continue the ties we have then pass them on our kids. Also, our group are still attracting new members. Younger batches that were somehow inspired by the way we keep our relationship intact, we share it to them and hope that they would learn from us too!;)

Yes, if ever they see me I always make them feel that I am always there for them. If they need something, I'd do my best to fulfill some of their needs.

I'm 29 now and my longest friendship (still currently running) is for around 22 years. She left for the US already but eventhough we're miles apart, when we talk over the phone or chat online, it's still like we're kids again. Some friendships are truly enduring and that is something we should keep on holding to.

i am not that much old to show a big count for my relationship, but one thing i would like to mention that it realy needs a fortune to get such a friend to last longer..i will tell you about my misfortune..my best friend was a girl..we were a childhood friend..we grew younger but then also we were good friend..then she fell in love with a boy..i was the first to she shared this..i was also very happy about her..she introduced me with her boyfriend..everything was okay..but after a month her boyfriend asked her to quit with me bcoz he didn't liked that much of affection of her with me..she came and told this to me..and listening to this,i planned and left that place after two months without telling her..10 years of friendship was broken..

Sorry for your loss! But seriously, you should check in on her from time to time, as she and that boy may break up and whose shoulder will she cry on? Have you attempted to get in touch with her since leaving?

My best friend still lives in the little town where I used to live. She and I use the phone, our car, email, and snail-mail to keep in touch. We recently spent the weekend together as I traveled alone to see her and wound up staying for the weekend. Her mother was ill and I felt like she needed a support system! I also have a close friend who lives in California, but we lost contact for nearly 15 years when he moved. It took me two years of diligent searching to find him as much of his family moved to Cali with him! But when I got him on the phone, it was as if we just spoke yesterday. Those are rock-solid friendships for which everyone should want! Thanks so much for responding to my discussion!!! :-)

I love all of my friends, but I cherish dearly my closer, older friendships. I make friends everywhere I go, but I cannot possibly stay in touch with everyone! Have you any suggestions on how to maintain the long-term friendships? Thanks for your input

We were since three years old and up to now, she's one of my most treasured friend even though 13 years had passed since then. The difference of our religion does not became a hindrance for us to get close and be the best of friends. ..^^..cherry

Well I have always thought that what makes us different is what attracts us to our friends! I have never even considered the religion of my friends, but after considering it, I think that my friends represent many religions with the only exceptions being hindu and buddhists. If any of my friends practice those, I am just not aware of it! :-) My best friend is much like me in the fact that we don't attend a church, but will do pray together. Thanks for your response!

Hello there. I am 24 years old this year. My longest relationship with a friend is 20 years. Considering my age, I think that's quite an incredible statistic. =D I knew that friend since we were both 5 years old. How time flies and I am glad that we are still in touch as good friends. Even though we hardly meet up due to our busy schedule, we are still good friends. =D

Staying in touch is vital in a friendship, otherwise you may miss out on a great accomplishment or an opportunity to be the friend's support system during rough times. The older the friendship, the stronger the bonds!

The oldest friendship I have started in the second grade. I met her on the school bus. We have been friends for almost 24 years now. We were in each others weddings. She is going to come to visit me next month because we live in different states now.

I wish I could have been in my best friends wedding, but she got married shortly after quitting high school and my parents would not let me be in her wedding since they felt it was condoning her young relationship. :-) I was only 15 at the time. She is divorced now and has been single for over 15 years now, but she knows that if I could have been there I would have been. It didn't hurt her too badly, as I am the godmother of both of her daughters!

Friendship is a kind of human relations. It's a human instinct to make friends. When in trouble, we need friends to offer us help, support and encouragement. With success achieved, we also need friends to share our joys.

What a great idea! I never considered celebrating an anniversary with my friends! Maybe as opposed to a high school reunion, I should hold a friendship reunion!

My longest friendship has lasted for more than 10 years,I can remember exactly. I don't think the time have much efficiency to the intimacy between two friends. For some friends, we known each other for more than 10 years, but we are not so close. So, I think the real close friendship I have now is 6 years, nearly 7 years.

Honesty is a trait that I used to not care about. Many friends I have had in the past were compulsive liars and lied about any and everything! I never considered honesty to be a prerequisite for my friendship as I like the liars too. :-) The one thing I cannot stand in a person is rudeness or cutting conversations short because they are not interested. None of my friends are guilty of this, but I have dealt with it in the past. Needless to say, those folks are no longer in my friendship network! Thanks for your input.

My bestfriend relationship with someone? It's turning 8 years this 2008 and my bestfriend is a girl.. she's younger than me but she can cope with my thinking. Actually we have a lot in common. So i guess that's the reason why we mix. *LOL*
