Why work for a significant change?

There are different occupations in this world and each one finds his joy in his own way. But, I find myself really happy if I work for something which brings about some good positive change in this world. For example if I do a job which brings in joy and happiness from a downtrodden or a disadvantaged person, I get immense happiness... This is what I feel the real job and the real happiness in this world.. It may be the one which is mentioned as karmayoga I suppose..

I believe that far to much emphasis is placed on 'helping others' in this world. I'm not saying that helping others is not worth anything... it can be very satisfying to have contributed pleasure or assistance to someone, I'm just saying that I think there is too much importance placed on it and often for the wrong reasons. I think many people feel guilty inside and feel that they have to help others in order to make up for something they believe they've done wrong, or to try to balance out their karma, or to feel 'worthy' of the good fortune that has come to them. I believe that the best way to help others is to find the connection with your divine source and live your life freely and joyously, and then no matter where you go or what you do, people benefit just by being in your presence. You don't have to do anything.

You are true in mentioning that I have given more stress on the point 'helping others' and I agree with you that uniting ourselves with the divine force is the ultimate. I too agree that there are some who think that they should help others in some way or the other in order to sort out/get rid of the impacts of the mistakes they have committed in this world. I agree to all these things. But still, it would be nice if you could give some comments through the other way around. The culture and the life style is entirely different in the west when it is compared to India and the other regions around. Here, the disparity between the poor and the rich or the well-advantaged and the less-advantaged is very high. It may be true that it is one of the fastest growing economy. But still, it does not improve the condition of our country. It still worsens the condition I feel. I was just trying to fix the context for you to think over from that base. I did my graduation in Botany. Then, I was not much interested in taking up any jobs inside the four walls. To be frank, so only I selected the development sector and I did a course called 'Development Management'. But, I undergone quite a lot of changes during that course. The course was in such a way that it made us understand the critical poverty web and make us think on that for reflection. Moreover, it enabled us to work for that in a professional manner. So, in our context, helping does not mean just doing something for them. It may mean also making them have at least two meals a day. But it may not fix to all the contexts. Absolute poverty still exists here. In that case, if I see a person smiles because of me, I get real happiness. But that is not only the way through which I derive energy. I also get happiness if some of my work would help to conserve the nature. But in the process of helping to change/work for the betterment of the lives of a few people, there comes disappointment seeing some of the reactions/attitude of the people. In such condition, I used to feel strongly that the only thing we have to do is work towards our enhancement of the spiritual growth. But still, i am experimenting with my life, trying to bring some balance in the life...

Poverty in your country is no more undesirable than the poverty in my own country. They're different in appearance buy not different in nature. I have been to Calcutta. I have had women approach me for money carrying babies whose limbs (I was told by my friends) had been severed by the mothers themselves, in order to obtain more sympathy, thus more dollars, from the tourists. There are equally horrifying conditions here and just as plentiful. The thing is that the Law of Attraction - which is the basic building block of this universe - the core principal that this universe operates on, states that what you put your attention on grows. Therefore as you put your attention on poverty then the 'reality' of poverty becomes more and more of your experience, gradually pinching you off from your joy. Obviously though, if your wanting better conditions, you have to at some point have your attention on the problem in order to envision what would be better. Once you do that it is best to have your attention on what would be better. Which is better... providing food for the poor, or teaching them self-reliance? Which feels better... living your life in joy, or focusing upon the suffering of others. This might sound harsh to you my friend, but EVERY ONE CHOOSES THEIR OWN EXPERIENCE. That is a concept most people have a hard time accepting. It's much better to heal the poverty in your own 'soul' than to attempt to correct it in others. And when you are living in joy and abundance then it will spill out on others that are wanting to live as you live, and will help and inspire them. I just think that many problems that are so huge like that (poverty), are not so easily corrected with a head-on approach - that often it is better to take a more lateral viewpoint. But certainly you should do in your life whatever brings you joy.

Also, I want to add a response to your statement that: "I too agree that there are some who think that they should help others in some way or the other in order to sort out/get rid of the impacts of the mistakes they have committed in this world." I just don't understand why so many religions want to promote the idea that man was conceived in sin. And your statement implies that belief. Every thing that you do in your life leads you into the next moment... how can that be a mistake? When your 'next moment' is not full of conditions that you would prefer, you don't have to 'make up for your mistakes' you simply have to do a little mental house-cleaning is all. It is your own thoughts that have brought the experience to you. That's not a 'mistake'. It's called growing.

Everybody does the work - some work or the other. What is important is one should always do better than the other - not for competition, but with one's dedication, carefulness, maintaining the time and most important high quality work. If one does little more work and more qualitative work, he is yogi. Thanks for posting interesting topic.

You are right. The quality of the work only matters a lot. Dedication adds the essence to it. Thanks for the comment.
