Suprise in the woods

Ruffled Grouse - This was taken with my new Canon S5 with Immage Stablization. I was able to use the 12x Optical zoom to get in close before I was dectected by the Grouse.

As my son and I were checking our deer stands before hunting season we spotted this Ruffled Grouse puffed up and doing the matting dance. As it turned out I followed the first rule of shooting wildlife. Take the shot right away then try for a better position or angle. This one turned out to be the best shot out of abut 5 I was able to get off befroe he was into the brush. it pays to always have your camera with you and ready.

wow thats a great shot! aah look at him, strutting his stuff and looking all manly..errr grousy lol! his neck plumage all puffed out makes it look like he has a big mane. the only birds wandering the ground around here are roadrunners..neat little guys but not nearly as impressive as yours!
