Do you think the hand-free mobile phones will decrease amount of accidents?

In California, soon will came to the action a new Law, prohibiting use of the mobile phones while driving, without hands-free devices. I have read several researches claiming that the worst problem with mobile phone use is related not to the device handling, but to the human distraction. Distraction factor will not change much with introduction of the hands-free devices. And what about other activities while driving: kissing, reading, eating, making love, arguing with your spouse? Should be all separate Laws covering every possible distraction? You opinion please.

I must admit that those times when I eat, smoke or search in my handbag I feel guilty because I know I should not be doing it while I'm driving. Luckily where I live it's unusual for there to be other traffic around but still, I have done these things while I'm supposedly in control of the vehicle. I think it should be illegal to do anything that detracts from proper control of the vehicle. People should stop to eat or use the phone etc.

Hi Ms, Nice to hear from you. Yes, everybody once a while do something usafe, while driving. I might be distracted as well, when I need to do something with my GPS or am looking for CD to exchange in the player. My point is that the government cannot list all the distracting activities as separate Laws, the main Law prohibiting reckless driving, should be enforced. I think, an individual war with hands-free mobile phone use is ineffective. I am having personal experience driving in another country, where cellular phone use is prohibited, and the amount of accidents is much higher, due to the low respect between the drivers and aggressiveness of the overall beghavior, and driving in particular.

No, I don't think that wud help the case.. Even on a hands free device, a number of accidents have been reported.. I don't think we shud use our mobile pones while driving at all.. We shud stop our car and then talk, and that's exactly what I do while I have a call while I am driving...

Agree with you. Reckless driving should be prohibited in any ways. Just last week they guy almost hit me, as he was working on his laptop, while driving. And there is no separate law, prohibiting laptop use.
