Banking when broke?

I was watching a TV program where the boy took out $2.50 from his bank and it was supposed to be funny and it reminded me when I was so broke I went to the bank and took out $2.00 out of the $2.84 that was left in the account. I had to go right to the teller because the machine only gives out $20s. Today I checked my balance and was all excited that there is $20.56 so I can take the $20 from the machine and avoid the embarrassment of going to the teller. I live in a small town where everyone knows everyone. Have you done this? Would you?

I had a situation the day after Thanksgiving that just hurt. I was coming home from work and my tire just blew out. I was pretty upset because I was alone, I was wondering how I would get the help I need to get home. So I stopped initially at a mini mart, but they were busy, so I went to a auto parts store. This young girl helped me as best she can to change the tire, but a police officer saw the deal, changed the tire, and when I thanked him, he said that he had a wife and didn't want no one to pass her up in that same predicament. The next day, I had to buy a new tire, but wasn't sure, and come to find out I had some money on my credit card, and I used that to buy my tire, which I felt was a blessing. I had like $25, and I took out $20; so I know about that.

That is so sweet to hear a story like that. It is nice to know there are people out there that will lend a helping hand in times of need. It is hard to get by sometimes and when we get those little Bumps in the road it is extra hard. Thanks for sharing!

Oh I am glad nothign liek that happend to me beofre and hope never will. But sure I would be embarrasst, but I will do it, if there is not other chance hwo to get money from my bank. And if someone see it I don't care, all the life is about you and not about other people. We care sometimes too much about what other people think and it can reallt make our life going not how we want.

Very true point. I would rather people think differently of me and give my children bread, then not give them the bread and have my pride. Thanks

I remember one time trying 3 ATMs to get money out, I was out of town and they could not give a balance. My son was 8 or 9 and hungry. We had a long drive a head of us and no cash. About 2 states almost out of gas and just pulled into a rest stop, figuring I would call someone to come out and bring me some money (this was before cell phones). We were sitting in December at a picnic table contemplating our situation. He gets bored and starts picking up trash to throw out...and low and behold..the kid found a $50. We got gas, something small to eat and were on our way. I got home and found out I had $.78 in the account..no wonders I could not get anything out.

LOL, I think we've all been there. Today it's easier because if you use a debit card and want to get cash back you can usually get any amount back (even $2.00). Back in my really broke days I remember going to the fast food drive-thru with a bunch of loose change so I could buy something from the 99 cent value menu. Sad, huh?

u know what vicki, i thought i was the only one!!! its really hard sometimes, especially when money matters are concern, but i've learned not to care about what other people think of me. i don't get embarass anymore as long as i have not hurt anyone. its yours and so what, if you widrew it from the bank. i mean i work in a rural bank in our area and my bank account is less than the maintaining balance. i don't care what they think. if i need it to support my family, i'd take it out in an instant, with my head held up high. far better than robbing the bank!!! LOL

I wish my bank ATM dispensed $1 bills. I'd be all set. I have cashed a check for $5. She even asked for ID. Sad. But I was glad she did.

When the money is extemely tight, it does make for tough times. In those times, our view of money changes as well. You saw that 2.00 as enough money to address some little need (or part of the need). $5.00 becomes a 'big deal'. I hope your situation has improved. When money is so tight, sooner or later it will become evident to others, in one way or another. djbtol

Thanks djbtol. I actually needed bread to make lunches for my kids for the next day of school. It was a need at the time. Things are more manageable today but still I get by. Things will be better in the future. Thanks

I've definitely done that sort of thing before, not with the teller luckily because our ATM does any anount, cash and change. I've also used my debit ard for purchases less than $5. Once I even remember putting $1.94 on debit and the rest in change!

I almost did that the other day (before my husband's payday). I was worried our account balance would be overdrawn if we withdrew too much from our account as there was at least one bill that didn't go through yet. But I wanted to get out $10 from the bank. I was getting the withdrawal slip all written out when I remembered I could buy a cheap item at the store with my ATM card and get cash back. So I stopped witting out the slip and I went to the store and got my money out that way instead. :P LOL Just a few days before this I had put the last bit of money that I had on me (which was $60) back into my account because like I said I was worried my account would be overdrawn due to the bill that was still floating. I went in to the teller instead of using the ATM due to the fact that the money is in instantly. Well, the teller has seen me before when depositing my husband's checks and she asked me if that was all? Like I was going to put in more than that. LOL I told her I'd be back in a couple of days when my husband gets paid. I was a bit embarrassed over that, but at least the account didn't go over, thank goodness!

Yeah we have to do some creative budgeting to make things work here without having things get overdrawn but we somehow always make it. Thanks

I work at a bank and I would be embarassed to let my coworkers see how little I have in my account. I'm sure when I was younger I used to let my account run down that low, but now I keep a couple hundred "hidden" in there so I don't have to worry about it. By hidden, I mean that it's in there, but I don't include it in my balance, so I forget I have it.

Yeah its really hard too laugh at that stuff on tv when you are living it isn't it? Obviously none of those shows are written by people from Nova Scotia or they would know reality isn't funny, huh? I have had to do that before and we also live in a small town. Right now we are faced with figureing out where the nearest foodbank is since for some reason my husband's cheque was like $100 less than usual this time even though he worked the same amount of hours as usual.

Oh that totally sucks about his check. I actually go to a food bank in Cape Breton a couple times a month if my car can get me there LOL which totally helps us out. Sometimes I do have a hard time relating to a lot of stuff on TV. They haven't live in small town NS for sure. You know you are starting to go nutty here is when you lose power for the tenth time in a month and say, oh well this will help save on the power bill. Forcast for the weekend here. High wind, wet, no power, cold. LOL Your friend losing it in Cape Breton Vicki :P

I don't really get cash out with the exception of paying my rent. I use my debit/credit card. So I don't ever have to deal with that really. But I wouldn't care... I'm not easily embarrassed.

I have been there too and continue to save all my nickels and dimes for everyday bills. I do everything I can to provide for my family especially my son. It gets really hard sometimes but I just keep my head held high because I know if I keep praying, one day it will get better. I wish you the best of luck with your money struggles. You are definitely not alone.

There have been times in my life when I had to do things like that. It is not only embarassing, it is depressing. To think, is this what I have become? $2 is that important to me? But it was. There was a time when my paycheck- once every 2 weeks, was just a little more than my rent, so I had almost enough money to put gas in my car to get to work to get the next paychek. Then I would pay my insurance, buy a few groceries, and hope nothing broke before the next payday. Luckily after only a couple of years like that, things improved for me. I am not rich now or even comfortable, but I am way better off than I used to be. Having been there, I really sympathize.

Thanks so much for sharing. It means a lot to me to know that I am not alone. Though I don't wish that hardship on anyone! But thanks for the support through the struggle.

i know what you mean, i have been in same situation before, it really is embarrasing, i have had to get like 20 out when only like $22 in my account and stuff. that happened to me a lot when i wasnt working much, it was really hard. and i live in a small town like you do, so everyone knows you and what you are doing, which makes it worse

Well yes many times. There comes a time that my account almost got closed because I have to take from it the whole amount of my money. That was really sad but there is nothing i can do about that. I have really no money. Yes, it was indeed very embarrassing but I guess there are things that we cannot avoid to happen.

i would also be embarrass when i would do that but things happen and when it happens, you have to do it in all cost...so with you, its like "i don't care!"...its a good thing that it hasn't happened to me yet (not hoping it would hehehe) but if it did happen, i have no other choice but to do the same as you did...anyways, it still my money...as long as i didnt do anything bad against anybody, its all good.

well my friend i know that feeling but you know what money is money no matter what, and one time i had a crap load of change that i threw in the change machine and this grumpy old lady said to me,what you only have change to cash in.so i turned around to her and said yes i do and i will take what ever it is for my family even if it's only two dollars.that changed her whole attitude towards me,and she said what a warm and kind person you are to think of your family like that, you are blessed my child.i just looked at her and smiled and walked away.never be embarrassed because you are doing what you can for you and your family and if thats what we all have to do then so be it.love, pattie
