Do you know about depression?

Did you know that depression is not a character flaw or something that means the person who suffers is a bad person. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be diagnosed with a blood test. So it's not even a mental condition actually, it's physical. It's just when our brains don't function the way so called "normal" people's do. Certain chemicals, like seratonin that the brain produces normally, aren't being produced to the extent they need to be or produce too much. It can make you want to sleep all the time, or "sleep your life away". Or it can make you not be able to sleep at all and you suffer from sleep deprivation and that carries all kinds of problems with it that can lead to feelings of poor self worth because you might think that it's something you've chosen, or people might tell you that you're lazy or that you're worthless and that just adds to your own bad feelings about yourself. A lot of people go without treatment because they're led to believe that if they take pills they're weak. Or they might try the medication for a little while and find that it makes them feel worse so they stop taking it and the symptoms come back. But if you stick with it for a while you'll find that you feel better in just a short while. The side effects don't last long, especially with today's newer medications. You might think that you're the only one who knows you. But your doctor has been trained to know what chemicals need to be replaced and he will be able to tell if you're depressed, sometimes before you realize it yourself. And if he's a good doctor, he will know what medicines work and how much to prescribe to make you feel better. Do you think you know more than someone who's been to medical school for up to 12 years? If you feel like you might be suffering from depression, talk to your doctor. He will know just what to do to help you. Then trust him to get you through it. He or she is trained to do this. Then seek the support of your community mental health center. They have all kinds of resources and can get you back on your feet and enjoying life again. Finally, if you need someone to talk to, call on me. Just add me to your friends list and contact me any time. I'm here to help.

I think there is a couple of types of what gets called depression, yes there is the chemical imbalance but then there is the one that is more like being hurt maybe by a partner in such a way that it pushes you into I guess you could call it feeling sorry for yourself, mistrust, blowing everything out of proportion and thinking too much, I really think sometimes it is just a matter of pride and thinking too much about the negatives of a situation, so I think there is two different ttypes of depression one medical and one mental I think...just my opinion..:)

I appreciate your opinion but I do not think that you are very educated about mental illness. Depression affects the way you think. Its a spiral of out of control negative thoughts. The mental and the physical affect one another. Its all intertwined. Depression as a mental illness and not just being bummed. It has to be prolonged and has to influence your life negatively in order to be diagnosed as a mental illness.

Well I don't put any illness, condition or trait in to little boxes because every person is different, and every case is different for many different reasons, I know about depression from personal experience so I am only talking about mine as it is probably different from everyone elses, everyone is different, nothing in life is black and white.

Sorry I was just giving you the medical description as to what you must be to actually be diagnosed with depression. Obviously nothing is that simple. I think I am not clear on your meaning. everything you are discribing is the same as medical depression. And you are right it is different for everyone. Its just the way that you discribe it at first its like you are saying its not that serious. It upsets me when people say depression is not serious because it has serioiusly screwed up my whole family. Like I said, maybe I'm missing your meaning though.

Thanks for posting this discussion. I think some people are prone to depression. There is a time in our life that we experience depression. I experienced depression the past years, as if I just wanted to be alone, I dont want to go to office anymore; I just want to sleep and sleep. Sometimes I just feel like crying without no reason at all. I didnt seek medical help. I am quite ok now even without seeking medical help.

I know a lot about depression. My dad suffers from depression. My brother and I also suffer from depression. I was unaware that depression can be determined by a blood test. I've never had a blood test but I've been diagnosed. You are right though its a real disease. I've had a lot of stigma from it. People don't understand and they often think you're just being sensitive.
