Time to Say Goodbye to Bandit

What a dog Bandit was. He was a mix Chihuahua and Poodle. He was black in color and he was a real talker. He was more human than he was a dog. He was born nearly 14 years ago. He just passed away sometime yesterday while my wife and I were at work. He was a lover of life and he loved my wife and all those who were around. He couldn't stand being left alone, but he managed. He drank more than just plain water. He had to have a little ice tea and ice with his water. He loved table food and knowing it wasn't the best for him, he still managed to get through eating it. If we left the table and there was still food on it, forget it. Bandit was on the table cleaning the plates off. Late in life, Bandit ended up with a friend by the name of Mimi. She was a cat and they really got along. Not at first mind you, but as time went on, they were like best friends. Last night after Bandit's passing, she really began to feel the loss as much as the rest of the family. Bandit was badly spoiled. He would not eat from a dog bowl like regular dogs, but he would eat from my mother-in-law's lap from a plate being fed a couple pieces of dog food with a hint of peanut butter. He loved it. Most importantly, Bandit loved people. We all loved him. After we said our goodbyes, Bandit was laid to rest in a box with his first ever toy, a stuffed bear between his paws. We know as a family that Bandit is in Heaven with the Lord and He is announcing our arrival when it is our time to return Home. We will miss you Bandit, we love you and will see you soon. Have you lost a pet and what was he or she like?

I was so moved reading this. I know exactly how you must be feeling as I lost Mitzi almost two years ago. She was the mother of Sooty who I still have (he is here with me now on my desk as I write). She was just over seventeen. Sooty is the age she was when she left. She had never been ill at all. Then one Sunday evening she just sort of crawled towards me and I knew something was wrong. At the same time the following evening she took her last breath. Both me and Sooty knew she was dieing and he washed her from head to toe during Monday. It took me a while to get over it and now two years on I fear before long I will be without Sooty too. They are more than animals or pets. They become part of the family. They leave their mark and can never be replaced. If only they could speak with their tongues and not just with their eyes and the gestures they make. I miss Mitzi.....

Thanks for such a moving response. My best friend and his wife has a dog named Mitzi. She is approximately 13 or 14 years old and I stay with her when they go out of town. She is a fun dog to be around, but unfortunately, she is deaf and has a skin disorder. I am not sure how long she has, but no matter what, I believe that pets such as dogs,c cats and birds are really part of the family. I plan on surprising my wife with a new puppy for Christmas, but for sure, there is no way that a new puppy, at least in the beginning is going to be able to replace the kind of dog that Bandit was. Thanks again and Happy Holidays.

We used to have one or the other pet (cats, dogs) at home, but had stopped it after we began developing very strong emotional attachment to them. But of late, my nephew is showing great interest in pets so we now have rabbits, parakeets, fishes as pets. But no cats or dogs.
