Do you think America should have a modern railroad system?

Japan and Europe have railroad systems to travel around. I think it would be fantastic for America to have trains to travel from Los Angeles, to Boise, to Nashville, to New York and so on. It could save a lot of petrol/car pollution. But would we have the money and resources to build such a thing?

Absolutely! America needs to upgrade its infrastructure, which has gotten to the point of being useless. I've traveled on mass transit in other countries, and it is superb.

America does have a rail system -- it's called Amtrak. It's a great way to see the country. Maybe not the fastest, but very reasonable. A high speed rail system would be a great idea. There are enough abandoned rail lines that might work for something like this.

It would be very nice if they did and maybe it would cut down on a lot of wrecks

The problem with the States is more than wanting freedom to get around and have the car. Many people fly and so don't have their car there either.
The biggest problem is that it still takes 3-5 days to cross the states on a train, just like a car so why not have the liberty the car brings?
I'm not saying that its right, but that its the facts. Most people that don't mind taking the time, would rather be able to stop & see the sights as you can when you drive.
I needed to spend some time in NJ this summer, but we only had a 3 day window in NJ. I really didn't need to be off work either, but without flying I couldn't have done the trip in 5 days, have 3 full days in NJ, traveled with my disabled mom AND only miss 4 days of work.

I really love to travel. I agree that Europe has an excellent train system. I haven't been there yet but I have seen photos of Japan's fast trains. I have traveled in California by train and found that the trains are adequate. However they could travel faster and try to keep on time. My train got to Los Angles five hours late, getting there just past midnight is a bit worrying. I also got a late train up the coast, that arrived close to midnight. The train company gave me a free taxi for a half hour journey. I was delighted with this because I had no wish to be stranded before reaching the end of my journey. Improving the routes might save a lot of car pollution. I think the USA has the money and resources to improve and update its train system.
Many countries do not have a rail system at all. In this case I travel around by bus, but I prefer trains. Some countries are decreasing its rail lines. I experienced this when I was in the beautiful country of New Zealand. I got a train from Christchurch south. That line is not used anymore. However the Trans Scenic is a lovely line and so is the one traveling north.

Well, I personally, think that would be just plain great!...I've never been on a train but have always wanted to.
There was talk at one time about a train going from here (Ohio) all the way to the Grand Canyon, and other places that I can't remember. This was some time ago, but I don't think it ever came about.
It would also be a little cheaper I think too for vacations. And what a wonderful way to see the U.S. No Gas to pay for either, yea!!..........I like it!
