The main grocery store was packed today so I went over to the little family run store across the bridge. I got 2 decorated birthday cakes for my little one's party, 4 sirloin cubed steaks, a rotiserre chicken, 2 pounds of spaghetti, 3 jars of brand name sauce, a large #1 birthday candle and my French vanilla Carnation instant breakfast drink mixes. My total came to $35! The chicken was a splurge for our dinner tonight and the drink mix wasn't really neessary either I just like it. I still think I did pretty good. Oh and as a bonus they cut the beef themselves fresh on site so hopefully no recall problems. So my question is, where do you find the best grocery deals...the big chain stores or the small family run stores?

Wow, that was a nice buy! I can sometimes find good deals at the smaller stores, but for the most part, big chains have better prices. Smaller stores often have better quality, though.

Maybe we just have an expensive chain store then LOL...Kmart groceries are even cheaper than that place! The small store's meat department and vegetales are definitely better than the bigger store. The bakery and deli could use some improvement but are still decent enough.

I find the best prices also at the small family owned stores and they are also very friendly.

I've noticed that too! The checkers at the big store are always to busy gossiping with each other to pay attention to the customers. The lady that checked me out today talked to ME the whole time I was in line. It was so nice!

Wow that is a great deal for all of that. We usually use the big chain stores and today we decided to try Walmart and were surprised on how much our weekly shopping cost - a lot more cheaper than buying from Safeway and or Giant. Mind you they didn't sell cold meats so that could of been why.

There is a Walmart Super Center an hour from here that has a huge meat department (actually a full sized grocery store) and the prices for meat are really cheap too. It just doesn't make sense to drive that far unless we have other things to do or the money to do a big stock up. I used to get a 5 pound bag of chicken pieces for $3.00 and whole chickens for $3.50. The regular Walmart has a small frozen foods section and a few cold things like milk, hot dogs, lunch meat, eggs, and orange juice.

You sure did do well. I love to go to the small family run stores, especially for my meat. There used to be a really good small store near my house where the owner did his own butchering. The prices were always comparable to the big stores, often cheaper but it was so good and like you said you knew there wasn't going to be any recalls. With the price of gas these days too it really doesn't save you to drive a long distance to a big discount grocer. Sadly, these independently owned "Ma and Pop" stores as we used to call them are going the way of the dinosaur. That's where my mom used to send me for lunch meat and hamburg all the time when I was a kid, a little store about a block away from the house I grew up in owned by an older couple. It was really neat to go into a place where everyone knew my name. I loved the penny candy too! I'll bet you don't remember penny candy, do you...lol? Annie

LOL...just barely! The little country store next to where I grew up actually had Swedish fish for a penny when I was still in high school.

Here in Cincinnati it seems that the chains always have better prices than the little stores. Its like the chains bring in more money, so they have the leeway to make things cheaper. While smaller stores have to deal with the warehouse prices, so the cost is passed on to the customer.
