Have we become too obsessed with our physical appearences?

We're sure by now you've read the news that Kanye West's beloved mother--inspiration for his song "Hey Mama," author of Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From The Mother Of A Hip-Hop Star, and major influence on Kanye's music--passed away last Saturday. What compounds this tragedy is how Donda passed away. The woman was only 58 years old, and she died before her time due to complications from cosmetic surgery. One look at any photo shows she looked pretty damn great for 58. She went under the knife for a breast reduction and tummy tuck, and sadly never recovered. What do you think? Have we obsessed about our looks and abused plastic surgery? I think it is only right to get plastic surgery is you are a burn victim or in some other situation who just wants to look normal. Using plastic surgery to look young is tacky and not to mention can look really bad when gone out control.

I think the American obsession with looks and body has gone way too far. There are so many things in life which are more important than looks, and yet people are still willing to do anything to try and look better. Most of the celebrities who have gotten face lifts look grotesque and not at all like themselves. I would prefer to see them aging gracefully. After all, we all know how old they are or can if we want to. Too many people believe all the sales pitches out there about how you have to remain young and glamorous at all costs. You have to diet until your bones stick out, dress in clothing that doesn't fit or feel good, eat nothing, have your boobs and butt altered, your nose fixed, your chin shaped, a little liposuction around the middle -- and on and on. Personally, I think God knew how to fashion our bodies, and if He wanted us to look like Perfect People in the American perception, he would have made us that way in the first place. We need to start knowing who people are instead of only caring about what they look like.

I agree but I wish fashion would catch up to non-stick figured women. I'm fuller figure and I can never find anything that fits. Maybe Plus size shouldn't be plus sized... but 2-6 should be mini sizes.

I don't think we've become too obsessed with our physical appearance because of this situation. I think we've already BEEN obsessed with physical appearance otherwise someone wouldn't have risked her life for these surgeries.

I think we have become obsessed with our appearance. the need to look young have gone too far. We dont love ourselves enough to accept ourselves for what we look like. We hate the way we look at ourselves so bad to point where people will themselves in harms way just to look a certian way. Yeah kanye's mom didn't look like she was 58. She looked healthy. i just didn't see a reason why she should have had the surgery. people have to ask themselves is it really worth it. They have to look at the consequences.
