33 men killed in coal mine blast in the Ukraine

We had several bad incidents in the US this past year. Now, here is another one. Are coal mines just too dangerous to work? Or are they just not careful? Is it strip mining where they use machines and just dig a huge hole and extract everything? I've heard of how ugly the strip mining can leave the area, but also have heard of ways to redo and renew the land afterwards. Perhaps that is the way to go now, instead of sending men into dangerous situations. http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/11/18/ukraine.mining.ap/index.html

That's terrible. The most important thing is to assure the safety of the workers. Maybe some better ways will be taken someday.

Deep mines are not shallow enough to access the coal from surface mining techniques. We lived next door to a surface mine for 20 years. The land is beautiful when they reclain it. It has forests for the wildlife as well as ponds. My husband has worked on a surface mine for years. We decided early on that neither of us wanted him in the deep mines. Deep miners make more money because of the risks involved. We did not think the money was as important as the safety. I know that we can be killed anywhere at any time but we just thought the risks were highter in the deep mine.

Coal mining is a dangerous job, many men have lost their lives to this.It is also dangerous to your health, you breath in all those things into your lungs. Many have had what they called the black lung, plus cancer and other respertory problems due to coal mining..I listened to a Tv show where they were talking with Loretta Lynn, you know she was a coal miners daughter? she was telling how hard her father worked in the mines, and would come home black from head to toe,and suffered from lung problems due to working in the mines...As she said the work was hard and the pay was low..

Mining has always been a dangerous but necessary job... strip or pit mining seem to be the safest way to go, and they do repair the land when they are finished. There are very strict Federal proceedures on how that is to be done. I don't want anyone to have to crawl down into a hole every day just so I can have a few luxuries... its not worth it!

I have heard about this kind of incidents in my country ,too. The same there were many people lost lives in the incidents and they nearly almost the farmers from the countryside who want to survive their family ,but unfortunately ,they lost their lives .I think the coal mines are too dangerous to work. For people didn't know when the accident will happen only until it has happened. That would make a big lost not to the victims' family ,but the country .The propal to reduce this should be work out .
