Hello All, We're going to a very dear friend's house for Thanksgiving. He is an excellent cook, and is rather adventurous when it comes to cuisine. With only the rarest of misadventures, of which I'll never utter a word --shhhhhh! I'm making the sweet potato caserole, and some home-maid Tapioca with figs & pears. We'll also be bringing the green salad. Though it's not popular, I try to eat fresh, leafy greens after all large meals. Anyway, I was first told that we would be deep-frying a turkey, as the main course. Then, the plans changed to a turduckin. Now, I have heard of turduckin before, but have never eaten it myself. It is a de-boned chicken, inside of a de-boned duck, inside of a de-boned turkey. It's supposed to be delicious. Yet, I wonder ... Have any of you ever eaten turduckin? Ever even heard of it? Does the gaminess of the duck overpower the taste of the chicken and turkey? Any thoughts???

Hi Luna. I am having a balony sandwich with chips and pop and a twinkie for desert. Someday I might move up in class to be able to have a turduckin. I had a deep fried turkey last year and it was OK. I don't know that it tasted any better than oven cooked. I sure do miss my uncle's gravy though. He passed on some 20 years ago. But some treats you never forget. Joy.

Now wait one cotton pickin' minute. How much energy have you spent helping your family move in the last six months alone? And, you're eating bologna for Thanksgiving? If I could, I'd have you over for a traditional feast. 'Course, that's a long way to drive for turkey! I'll be sending warm & fuzzies to you on Thursday, my friend!!!

Thanks for the well wishes, Luna. I might upgrade to pizza if I can find more than two nickels to rub together. Really, I don't know where I will be or what I will be eating yet. Afterall, this is Monday and Thanksgiving is Thursday, so I have plenty of time....lol.

Never ate any, but neither have I ever gotten a duck that had any twinge of gaminess, whether it was roasted at home or in a fancy restaurant or in the neighborhood Chinese eatery. But we only eat domesticated duck, not the kind they hunt in the wild. Sounds absolutely delicious, as described by you, LadyLuna, and then again by Chef Paul: http://www.chefpaul.com/turducken.html A fresh green salad is not unpopular with us. We prefer salad with most meals and preferably during or after, not before. Sweet potato casserole is very high on my list of favorite Thanksgiving foods and if people here keep talking about it, I'm going to have to bake up a batch of my own, even if dessert is going to be pumpkin pie.

Hello Drannhh, Well thanks for the supportive response. I've only had duck that was, in fact, very gamey. So, I'll trust you on the feasibility of some duck not being gamey. Hey, I'm open for trying new taste sensations. Especially after our mutual friend's discussion. I wouldn't want to be a party pooper! Though I do not know of Chef Paul, I'll take his word, and hope that our friend has sought out masterful advice on how to best cook the turduckin. Oh wait, maybe I should be armed with cooking advice, eh??? Yup, I'm on board with the leafy greens, good for digestion and all. And, I hope you get your fill of sweet potato caserole (yum, yum, yum!) Oh, by the way, are you making your pumpkin pie?

Hello Drannhh, Mums the word, I promise not to tell your new neighbors. Believe it or not, my pumpkins are still on the vine. I'll be cutting them this week, and cooking down the meat for pumpkin butter. Of course, the seeds will be enjoyed roasted with a touch of sea salts. Enjoy every aspect of your Saturnalia, or Solstice! Thanksgiving welcomes in one of my favorite times of year, so I'll be with you in spirit, my friend.

Every year I buy at least one "outdoor" Halloween pumpkin that will not be carved (although it is certainly decorative just as nature made it!) and when Thanksgiving nears I take that pumpkin in and save the seeds and cook the rest for pie. That is my fall tradition. Just before our last move the neighbors caught onto this and started bringing me their pumpkins, too. I made them pie that time and then we moved! Shhhhhh...please do not tell my new neighbors about this. Oh, yes. I dry the seeds and make sure to eat every one between Christmas and New Years Day. This is how I celebrate the Saturnalia.

I have never had turducken myself but is sounds interesting. This type of dish was also popular by the wealthy folks in the Middle Ages. Then songbirds were stuffed into quails, quails into chickens or pheasants those into ducks or geese, sometimes the whole thing was encased in pastry. The modern version seems to have its origins in Cajun cooking. In any case it seems like an awful lot of work. I would not worry about the duck. Domestic ducks have a nice flavour and taste and no gaminess to them. Bon appetit! enjoy this treat.

Hello Lindalinda, Thank you. I plan on enjoying the meal. You're the second to point out that domesitated duck is not gamey, so I'm gonna' have to trust that you and the above respondent, Drannhh, both know better than I. Thanks for sharing & Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello TerryZ, My personal experience with duck is just like yours. Yet, I've had two respondents here indicate that domestic duck is not gamey. I'm looking forward to giving it a try. I'll make sure to follow up on how it is. Thanks for stopping by!

3 birds in one - it seems yummy. Personally, I have not eaten such and I just cannot visualise how it will taste but I guess I can imagine if I put some other stuffings inside the chicken. The juice (or soup?) will sure turn out nice. Yummy!

Well hey there Whyaskq, How have you been? I haven't run across any of your discussions lately. So, it's really nice of you to stop by. 'Course maybe it's because I haven't been around much recently. Anyway... Yup, the turducken sure is interesting. I love the chef's comment that I posted to an earlier response: "It looks like a football". Yet, I'm sure it's going to be, as you say "yummy"! I'll let y'all know how it turns out. You have yourself a glorious day, OK?

Hello Camely, First, let me welcome you to the MyLot community. I hope you enjoy your time here. I also hope that someday you find yourself experiencing the yummy flavor of a full sized turkey, with all the dressing. It's really quite something. So, if I'm understanding you correctly, you first learned about American Thanksgiving Day from the t.v. show " Friends"?

Hello Red, The exotic isn't at all necessary when our hearts are warmed with the company of those near and dear. Come Thursday, I might just be wishing for the traditional. Yet, I have faith in our friend's cullinary skills. So, I'll let you know how the turduckin goes. Thanks for the Happy Thanksgiving greeting! We have much to be thankful for, and rest assured I'll be very aware of it on Thursday. Gobble, gobble!!!

I have never heard of this. Is it a common dish in another country? I'm trying to picture the dish but I keep coming up with a big turkey, with a smaller duck in it and a small chicken inside the duck LOL I've never ate duck before and would probably have image problems since I always loved feeding ducks as a kid. There isn't alot of difference in turkey and chicken as far as I'm concerned but I wouldn't know about the duck part. "COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS" **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Hello Twoey, Rumor has it that turducken has its origin in Cajun Louisiana. Being unfamiliar myself, it sounds as though your description is right on. Here is a link to an image of a turducken: http://www.post-gazette.com/food/20000319turducken3.asp And, here's a quote from a chef about it: "George Morland, chef at Smartie Artie's in Monroeville, didn't know what turducken was when he was asked to prepare it for 22 guests. When it was done -- after 12 hours of cooking, he said, "The roast looks like a 15-pound football." (Steve Mellon, Post-Gazette)" Thanks for stopping by & Happy Thanksgiving!

I had never heard of a turduckin before this discussion I like chicken and I like turkey I have never had duck before it sounds like it would be hard to make! I am having the traditional turkey and mashed potatoes with green beans, sweet potatos, dinner rolls deviled eggs and some a jello salad with pumpkin pie for dessert.
