Modern technology, love it or hate it

Modern Technology - I wish I understood it
November 19, 2007 6:38am CST
I admit to being something of a luddite, a bit of a technophobe and totally useless with a lot of modern technology. So I was completely lost at sea when my computer died the other day. I called a friend of mine who is very savvy with computers and he said he would come over and check it out for me, and after a couple of hours poking and prodding at the insides my computer was pronounced beyond resusitation. He did manage to pull the hard drive and back up so I hadn't lost absolutely everything but the machine was quite dead. Being a helpful mate, he said he would try and find me one of his spare computers, install all my*stuff* and get me back up and running and online again, but by then I was completely bewildered by all the techno-talk and jargon. He was talking about motherboards, intel chips, all kinds of wierd and wonderful terms my poor old mind just didn't understand. Bless him, though, he did manage to get me another machine that works so I'm back on line again - yay. The thing is, I haven't a clue how any of this stuff works, nor any idea how to fix it. So, my friends, how do you feel when faced with a barrage of techno-jargon?

LOL i can see myself in you. ^__^;; i'm not really technodumb, i have a little bit of knowledge about this and that but when it comes to details, expect that i'll just roll my eyeballs and faint. LOL i also depend on my computer genius officemates when my computer bogs down. i turn to them when i can't understand something or when i want to buy some computer accessories. when they start to speak on their own "computer language" i'll just say, hey, in english please?? ^__^;; but of course they are not always available to help me. at times like that i feel so dang helpless and i would start wishing that i took up computer science or something. ^__^;; i hate being completely useless when it comes to my "source of entertainment" (computers, tv and all that LOL).

LOL I hate being useless with all the modern technology too, and trying to read the manuals is almost like me trying to read Japanese :-)

The first computer that I ever used was one that I purchased for myself. I decided that I would teach myself how to use it. This has been about 11 or 12 years ago. I can now work on the software as well as the hardware of a computer. I teach others to use a computer now. I just decided that I would either learn to use it or I would tear it up trying. I learned to use it. The first cell phone that I ever used was mine. I purchased it and taught myself how to use it. Now I have a newere one and am trying to learn how to use all the bells and whistles on it. It has blue tooth technology, camera, radio, and so much more. I will either learn or tear it up trying. I love modern technology. I look at it as a new challenge each time something new comes out

Yes friend, its a very pathetic situation. Even in my office we have internet connection and once it is down thats it. The time doesnt pass and we become as though we have lost one hand. Atleast if net goes its ok, but when system gives some problem and shuts down then we become like a body without a soul ;P....

Sometimes I feel I am just too old to get to grips with the basics of modern technology, but when it does fail we are often left like fish out of water.

I'm not afraid of it, but I'm not real good with it either. I can talk "ram" and "motherboard" but wouldn't know one if it bit me. My roomie is better - the blind one - yes.

If I find someone is trying to explain something too technical and tough for my brains to digest, it means I am bored. I just wash my hands off and leave it to the experts. I believe we need not be experts in everything, some pies are meant for others :P

Very true hun, I have reached the stage now where I simply cannot understand the wretched techno-babble, thank goodness I know people who do understand technology and can sometimes fix it for me :-)

Well, it's quite annoying when others talk to you by using words that never been inside your brain for even a single cup of coffee. It's quite cool to learn that weird language, but I think all the people should not master it because those who work in computer repairs and other related jobs will be looking for another job, like when all of us already know how to treat cancer, why still go to a doctor?

I love it and hate it. Modern technology has been a blessing, and a curse, it just depends on how it is used.

I both love it and despise it. I know it's not technology's fault, for what people do with it...but all the same. A machine can save a life. A machine can take a life. I love wonders, I love that our race can be advancd by it...I despise the fact that technology like any tool, is a double edged sword and can also turn humanity into monsters. I know bits and pieces, enough to get by in this technological world of ours. I've a knack for understanding sometimes. All I can say is...like with anything, balance should be sought. This holds true for technology too. The unfortunate thing is, humanity tends to love extremes while disregarding what lies between them.. So all I can do is hope that someday, humanity will find a happy medium.

Well I pray that my computer wont crash. My 15 year old can fix anything wrong with a computer. My 19 year old nephew is going to college to learn how to fix computers. So I hope I will have it covered if it does ever crash.

We put together our computers, so I'm kind of ok with computer stuff, but there are lots of other things that I draw a blank LOL Usually when that happens I like to learn a bit about it so next time I will at least have an idea of what is being said. Actually I like to have at least an idea about as much as I can just for the fun of it ,which doesn't prevent me from drawing blanks often LOL

I like modern technology. I found the life can be much more interesting to have these stuff. It can also make us work efficiently.

if i faced such a situation, i would put it aside and wait for the related proffessional to solve it completely for me . because i think the tech and knowledge in the world is so much that one is impossible to master them all.what one need master is how work with the tool but not how the tool work. so, i don't hate modern tech, and i'm glad to use it for my work and life. when the there is something wrong with machine, i will just call the preffessional for help.never waste time to solve the problem by myself. happy psoting!

i'm suprised to say that i feel like i have stayed up to date for the most part, with modern tech. I feel like i owe half of this to my 17 year old tech/computer wiz. lol. I can only imagine what this upcoming generation is gonna come up with.
