I make it a point by thanking them as soon as they post on my discussion. It's courtesy also and they spend time reading your discussion and joining in the discussion. They make effort so by thanking them your showing that you are very happy that they post to your discussion.

It is not required but we normally do it out of courtesy. There are members out there who expect feedback for their responses and there are also who do not get upset when you did not reply or say thank you to them. if I have the time and energy, i would at least say thank you to them unless they replied to a very old discussion.

Just respond to those responses you want to comment on. And juggle that with the time you have available to spend.
Just enjoy yourself. :D
