my wife is going to the philippines in December but her Filipino friend who just came back from the Philippines said that in Detroit, Mi. (DTW) she was forced to dump all her candy that she had in her carry on baggage. Does this sound right? I since then have checked on the NWA and other airlines and cannot see where candy would be a problem..but I was wondering if anyone in this forum has had this problem..i am traveling later this year and i take my medicine and a some personal hygiene items plus a change of clothes incase my stowed luggage gets lost..but are you not allowed to bring food items on your carry on lugggage..??

I'm not sure how it works on international flights, but I know that domestically, most airlines have no problem with you bringing snacks as long as they aren't restricted (you should be able to find out what things are restricted on your airlines website -- things like outside beverages are not allowed). I would call your airline and confirm just to be sure.

i have never heard of this about the candy either but some people have had problems. i will check with the airllines and the travel agents..some people i talked to said they have heard about this...maybe an overzealous security force? i know that they planted some fake bombs and weapons and that 60 % of these phony bompbs/weapons got through because of lax security..maybe the security was tightened? or they were overzealous...i don't know..i will keep checking.

I had some pieces of candies (menthos and max) with me in my handbag when my father and I travelled to Canada last April and back to Phil in May, and the candies were not confiscated. The mineral water my father had was not allowed so I told my father to consume the water. All other liquids (perfume, shampoo, lotion) were not allowed at handcarried luggage/ bags, so we put them on the check-in luggages. We also had some chocolates in our handcarried bag when we left Vancouver going back to Phil, but most of the chocolates for "pasalubong" we placed at the check in luggage. Maybe they are stricter in the US, compared to Canada immigration officers. But I dont see why candies are not allowed. So I would suggest to put the candies and chocolates in your check in luggages especially if you're bringing a lot for pasalubong.

well i have a Filipino friend and whenever she goes to Filipino or even somebody fform her place is coming then she always gets candies for me.So i am quite sure that bringing candies should not be a problem.and furthermore candies are i guess one of the common items that are being sold on every international airport.if there would have been any problem in taking candies in flight then the airport authoriites would not allow so amny shops around.donot worry.candies is not at all problem to bring.

if you buy the producets in the "safe" zone in the airport then you can bring them onboard..maybe this candy was not bought in the "safe" zone..but i have had other people tell me the same reports that candy was confiscated..and this was Heshey candies.. there also was a security test and sixty percent of the fake bombs and weapons got through security..maybe the security was overzealous because candy is covered with tin foil ?? x-ray could not penetrate..? well, i am going to check this out myself..at the travel agency and i know people who work for Northwest..thanks for your input..coming from the was not the problem..but it was right here in Detroit DTW that this happened..i found out never to take anything for granted ...thanks for your input...

Traveling to another countries is not as fun as it used to be. There are so many restrictions nowadays that you cannot bring this, you cannot bring that and so on and so forth. In some airports they would treat you like criminals and have dogs to sniff at you. i wonder who started all this?

I came to the US from the Philippines last September; my point of entry was also Detroit. I also had some candy in my bag but they didn't make me take it out. Maybe she just happened to be randomly selected to be checked? Or maybe she had a whole lot of candy. They do have a limit on liquids in your carry on luggage and might confiscate your personal hygiene items if they exceed the specified amount.

i wonder if hershey kisses looks suspicious in the x=ray..this happened in detroit not the philippines..but it could have been a "newly trained" agents or a terrorist alert as they just had a check with 60 percent of the fake bombs and weapons going trough without security finding them...that could cause a lot of trouble for the security agents..

thanks for the post..i heard of the same tale from other people..some people still try to carry knives and box cutters onboard...even finger nail cutters are forbidden...60 per cent of the fake bombs and weapons they planted in a recent sting operation ..got through so the security was caught with their guard down..maybe the security agents are being overzealous? well, it gives me an excuse not to bring candy for the philippines..lol

I just got an e-mail from a friend in Philippines about travel advisory. They tighten the securities to all international flights coming from Philippines specificall bringing along pirated DVD'd CD and other pirated stuff. Customs even open your purse to inspect whats inside....well they particulary mentioned Detriot. But could not imagine confiscating a candy ? during my past travels, drinks and snacks are not allowed unless you buy those inside the airport. Toiletries are not allowed especially creams and liquids...make up just the small amount but you have to put them inside a ziplock. Medecines, as long as you have prescriptions..but the common ones like tylenol they accept. As for me I have to bring some because I have a baby with me... Good luck ! (wish I could go home as well :-()

thanks for the post..my wife (asaswa) will be leaving Dec 5 and coming back May 28, 2008..i will join her around May 7 for three weeks.. I am glad you told me about the DVD..we never buy these items anyway because this is where certain criminal elements make a lot of money..from bootleg tapes and DVD's..it happens a lot in the Philippines but also a lot of other countries too.. have a nice holiday

Maybe they're afraid you'll bring hard candy and pelt it at the pilot in order to take over the plane. Craziness. What about diabetics who need candy in case their blood sugar drops? What about kids who will shutup if you give them candy. ALLOW CANDY FOR THE SAKE OF OTHER PASSENGERS, PLEASE! lol

i guess it is because the airlines just got an evlaulation...60 percent of the "fake bombs" and "fake weapons" got through the screeners..duh..but the doughnuts did not get past the security guards..so you are safe..you are right..i get hungry on the airplance to japan..12 hours and i need more then what the airplane wants to dish out..lol

I've taken that route several times already (Philippines to USA via Detroit) and I have never heard of a rule that you can't bring candies in your handcarry bag. What's prohibited are significant amounts of liquids, as well as sharp objects. There might be a problem though if it's an agricultural product because there might be pesticides or diseases, etc.

i don't know if that' a new regulation of the airport. And it's nothing to lose if it's for the safety of all. Maybe they want the candy of your friend:)

60 per cent of the planted bombs and weapons got through the security in a recent sting operation at the airport...maybe now the agents are overzealous? these were Hershey canddies..maybe the agents were hungry? lol..anything is possible since 911.. i don't go to Canada as I don't want to bother with the added security...i used to do to dine and sightsee...now i have just lost interest and i only live 45 miles from Windsor, Candada..but I have been to Germany since and my wife brought a lot of German candy back with her on the carry on bag..lol..but I still like American candy better...snickers..hershey..etc etc
