Do mothers always know what's best for their children? I think that the majority of the time they do, at least when their little. When they get older and independent, then that's another story. But what do you think? Does mother know best?

I am a mom and grandma. Can't say I always know best but do believe I don't and won't give our daughter's bad advice. My existence and experience is worth something so I'd like to think I'm slightly ahead of the game of life a tad bit.

My husband has a saying "as I get older, my parents get wiser". And I agree with him. thanks for posting.

I realized how smart my parents were once I became an adult. Just happens with age! You are welcome.

As I grew up I realized that my parents weren't as dumb as I thought they were and I figured out I DIDN'T know everything about life. LOL

mothers know what is good for their kids but the problem is when we get older, our wants and needs are so much different from what they think we need and want. but whatever happens, at the end of the day, mothers simply want us to be happy. and since we are their children, they want us to have the best in life.

I think that generaly speaking mothers know best. I never thought my mom knew what she was talking about until I grew up and realized she did. I wish I would have listened to her when I was yonger. But I guess we normally learn the hard way. I hope that my daughter will listen to me and learn by my mistakes. Have a great day.

When I was growing up I too thought my mom had no idea what she was talking about, but as I grew up and started experiencing life for myself I realized I was wrong. I think we need to teach our kids right from wrong and give them the choice to chose. They have to find their way and all we can do is hope and pray that they do the right thing.

I think when they are little, mother know best. Not sure as they grow up. I am a mother of a 7 month old, and i think that I know best for her at the moment. As she grows up things may be different, but I am hoping with my life experience that most of the time i will know best. I didnt think my mum knew best when I was growing up and I still don't think she does, but I have lived life a little different to her.....

The reason I posted this question is because my 13 month old has been fighting his naps and i KNOW when he's tired and NEEDS to take a nap. But I've been doubting myself - do I really know that he needs a nap? Does he need a nap? Or am I just being an overpowering mother??? Doubts that I guess are common, but still float around in my head...I'm just paranoid, I guess.

I think for the most part, most mothers do know best. However, we have to know that it all depends on the mother. I have a mother who is loving and very wise but, I have a dear friend who has a grandmother who is a former hooker and a mother who is a former professional shoplifter. I have a neighbor who yells obscenities at her 4 year old child and allows men to come into her home a smoke pot around him. These are example of mothers who certainly don't know best or they know best and choose not to act on what's best. If you have or had a mother like mine who is loving and caring you should consider yourself very fortunate because there are many people now-a-days who get the misfortune of being born to some awful mothers. I have learned that giving birth does not automatically make a woman maternal.
