Must have toys for toddlers?

My twins will be a year old just before Christmas. I'm still reeling with how fast the year went by, and want to make their birthday/holiday really special. Are there any toys your 12-18 month olds LOVE? Something they can't make it through the day without playing with, or something that helped them learn?

My son will be turning ONE two days later. He loves to play with things around the house. He tries to stack things..loves to make noise with a spoon and plate...and loves to open and close plastic bottles. So, I would suggest getting things that they might enjoy doing rather than go out and buy toys. My older son never liked cars and stuff like that....but my younger one does.

My son is 21 months old now. He loves stacking stuff up. It doesn't matter what it is. Today he was stacking empty baby food jars. My son absolutely loves books. He especially likes his block books since he can look through them or stack them or whatever else he wants to do with them.

Mu son, who is 14 months old Loves books. He has lots of board books and sometimes sits looking at them for 15-20 minutes by himself. He also has a set of mega blocks that he enjoys. I wouldn't go too overboard worrying about toys being educational. If it is something he can manipulate, make noise with, or discover new things with, he likes it- and it will help him learn. Mirrors are good, riding toys, large cars- bigger than matchbox, but the same idea- they make them for toddlers. Music is always a hit too, toddlers love to dance.
