I just happened to come across this article in Time mag (Nov. 19 issue) about Neuroligist Oliver Sacks' book titled Musicophillia-Tales of Music and the Brain. Where he explored the exquisite complexity of music's effect on the human by presenting a survey of research and case histories of patients whose lives has been fundamentally changed by music. Two very interesting cases were a surgeon who survived being struck by lightning who later found for himself an "all-consuming, life-disrupting passion for listening to, playing and composing piano music. Wow! another touching tale is that of an American musician who was sticken with amnesia so devastating that " from a minute to the next, he doesn't know who, where or wht he is". Tsk tsk tsk. He only remembers two important things: that he loves his wife (love is greater then memory loss) and that ability to sing or play on the piano any musical piece. Sack suggested that music was a rope that holds the patient to those two very important things he remembers, the only things he remembers. And without constant performance, the rope might break. Can you believe that? I do ... i mean music really in one way or the other affect how we think. I met some friends who are very appreciative of music and has the ability to play musical instruments, tend to be cool-headed, some are quite serene especially with decision making.... but for those who are not into music tend to be "rough" in a sense in their manner of conversation. I am saying a general observation, may not really be true for all. With myself, i can sense that i feel relaxed with good old songs, when i'm down i sing out some songs to myself and a little later,i kindda feel lighter. How about you do believe that music affect how we think or how our mind rewire itself? WHat's your experience with music?

I feel connected to music! I have loved music from as far back as i can remember! I listen to all types of music as long as it pleases me, but i prefer the softer sounding stuff like Easy Listening! I have also noticed certain music eg,sad songs, can change my mood to sad, etc! Friends of mine would listen to fast tempo music to get themselves in the right mood before going out dancing! :) Take care Bong.

Well, I guest so... Have you heard that there has been an experiment about the music of Mozart wherein a "rat" that have heard the song of Mozart is more intelligent compared to one who hasn't. And there are also advices, specially for pregnant women that they should listen to classical/instrumental songs instead of metal, rock or any other songs - You know why? Because they say that it has a great impact on the development of one's child brain. It also affects the behavior & attitude of a certain child as it grows up. Its a fact though.

I think music has a deep seated affect on us as it can be many things, it can relax and it ca excite, and sometimes you remember what music was playing when something beautiful happens in your life, I don't think I would go as deep as Oliver Sacks has gone but I think music is there mainly for us to just enjoy.

music affection - [Does MUSIC really affect the human mind?] [bong_domingo (212)] [http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1335482.aspx]
Hi bong_domingo. Music is actually noises that produced by any instruments means, where it mixed in a well composed arrangements. Or as effable quality noise. OK come back to your question at your last paragraph, and my answer is for YES. I do believe that music affect how we think. It represent as your current personality. Active or inactive or passive life's mood. And for 'how our mind rewire itself', mind is an outcome from our brain whereby our right brain do the processing task to accept it as our excitement. Agree or disagree to the genre of the type of music, our brain will automatically wired by nerve to the bottom of our heart for the decision making the answer for the level or degree of 'like and dislike'. This process of decision making by our heart, thus make human accepted as 'mind' speaking or literally as 'opinion'. That is why when we talk about 'excitement' matter in our life, there are says about "what your mind speaks or tells about it?". HAPPY DAPPY.

(which i guess is really the same thing in a way lol) i listen to sad calm music when i'm sad, and it seems to help me get through that state. Same thing when i'm in a mood to party, put on some fun outgoing music and i get all set to go.

Hi! That was indeed a very interesting piece of information about music.I do personally feel music does have the ability to calm our minds. Many a time when I feel low I just sit and listen to music and it helps to lift my spirits.I remember when my son was very young he never used to sleep at nights. We just used to play some soft music and he would just keep quiet.I really admire those who compose music , those who sing or play an instrument. They are really gifted as they are able to entertain and soothe people's minds.Music is indeed a wonderful tool.

Music has a great impact on minds. Listening to the right kind of music in the background can help people when they are thinking, learning or working. To get a good effect of the music, the music should be familiar and comfortable. Music can motivate a mind. Music is energy.

I think that music is so important. There is something about a song that can speak more than your own words can ever express. Music has brought out emotions I didn't know I had, it has been a literal pain killer for me, when I am singing, I feel no physical pain at all. Music has at times literally saved my sanity and my life.

Music for me affects a lot of people. For some it soothes them while for some motivates them. In my experience, music does affect the human mind and the way we think. Some motivates me to do something and some calms me down. Before, I used to play some music in my background when playing computer games or doing some homework. The kind of music affects my ability to think and to focus well on what I am doing. Playing hard rock music influences me to be more aggressive, especially back when I still play Gunbound, light rock music, like Parokya ni Edgar or Jason Mraz songs, tends to make me calm, and hip hop makes me want to dance. Doing homework is hard when I play rock and hip hop music but not for calm songs and rock music makes me concentrate more on other things. It may seem weird but that's me! :-)

Yes, music does inherently affect the Human Mind. As already mentioned from the responses on here.. music have the capacity to communicate even the baby inside the mother's womb. Lately, parents are advised to surround their kids with music that talk about good values because it can change and shape how we think and feel. They say music is universal. It is one thing that every human being can relate to. These all points out to the power music has on every person that experiences it. We experience many different emotions and become inspired by it..

Does music really affect the human mind? I think so, I love listening to music. I'm a very emotional person and I can easily relat to the message of the song. When I'm sad and depressed, I just listen to music and I feel relaxed. It's very soothing to my mind. I even listen to music when I am happy. I listen to music everyday I even sing along with the song. I feel relieved especially when I sing with the song. I feel like my problems are solved even if it's not. Music does a lot of things in my life.

Yes, I can affirm that music affects ones' mindset. It makes your brain works well. It may just be a psychological effect or some sort, I still find music very refreshing. Well, of course, it depends on the type of music your listening.

I do think that music does affect the mind. If you listen to upbeat music it will affect the mood you have, and if you listen to sad music it will affect the mood your having at that time as well. Bringing back memories, or listening to the words.
