Monkeys: our cousins??

Do you believe that we are evolved from apes? Have you noticed any monkeys starting to evolve into people yet? If we evolved from apes..why are they still running around..have some of them failed to become human????

Littlefranciscan, you've got a point and a strong one. Even to myself, I don't believe that we came from apes.

Erick to believe we evolved from apes would also mean we must believe will evolve into something else given enough time..I wonder what scientists think about our next stage..we went from shuffling around with hairy bodies unto this upward body with out hair..Perhaps in a 1000 years we will be flying around without feet..Logically it makes no sense..and for my faith.. I believe in creation.

This kind of argumentation is known as a straw-man argument for reasons that will become apparent. I have never met anyone that seriously believes humans evolved from apes but a lot of people do believe, with good reason, that humans and apes share a common ancestor from which we both evolved. all the best urban

There's a common misconception that once a species evolves from another, the older species disappears. This, however, is not always what happens. It's quite possible for a species and the species it evolved from to co-exist. We have proof that such a thing has already occurred. As for why we don't see monkey's evolving into people - ignoring the fact that people didn't evolve from monkey's, we don't technically 'see' creatures evolving. That is to say, even though every creature on this planet is evolving in some way or another, we can't catch them in mid-speciation. It's too long of a process for us to do such a thing. We can only catch evolution on a smaller scale.

I respect your opinion and of course expect the same.. I cannot accept that we would be evolving from apes..if we evolved from apes that means in several thousand years we will evolve into something else..maybe we will wake up as a tree?

Well, again, that's not how evolution works. If that's what you want to continue believing, then far be it from me to try and convince you otherwise. I sincerely hope you never find yourself in a conversation with a person who has no qualm with ripping your argument to shreds. My advice - at least study it a little. You don't have to believe it, just understand the concept. It'll ensure that you can avoid some of the common misunderstandings many have about evolution.

Notice that Latrivia doesn't bother to tell you what humans evolved from? or who or what that common ancestor is. She's clearly hiding her own ignorance while attempting to point out yours

Actually monkeys evolved from Humans. In a newspaper article this week, some Japanese college students and young monkeys, were in a memory test, and the monkeys beat the students every time. We are just beginning to realise monkey intelligence equals or beats that of Humans. Monkeys are too smart to go around bragging about their intelligence, and they have kept us completely baffled since the beginning of time.( Which doesn't say much for the Human Brain does it?)

lol..that is even funnier..monkeys evolved from humans..I guess that is a new way to look at it..no doubt monkeys learn quickly through the reward system!

I think you have made it clear monkeys beat your intelligence but please don't feel free to speak for the rest of us. all the best urban

Hi littlefranciscan! Yes, you got a point there. haha..How come there are still monkeys around when evolution took place. Maybe the other monkeys are sleeping. LOL! just joking.. However, I really don't believe I have evolved from apes. I am no expert so I can't really debate on evolution by Charles Darwin. All I know is and I firmly believe that I was created by God. Take care and have a nice day. :)

I don't believe it..but I want someone to show me any apes or monkeys showing any sign of progressing into a human..it's been thousands of years..surely by now..these monkeys and apes would be people;)

According to my sources, Humans and Chimpanzees share 98% of the same genes which means only a mere 2% makes us different to the chimpanzees!

I guess you and I have different resources..I wish you luck ..I dont think our genes have any likeness to that of a chimpanzees ..Genes are handed on from parents..as far as I know..neither of mine were of the cimpanzee race.

Well.. Articles are created by someone..they are merely men that are speculating. I thank you for the link and I will actually look at it. I will not believe we evolved from apes or monkeys..Even though at times we act like them.

It is true that the genetic codes are passed down from our parents but I found an article which proves my point. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/08/0831_050831_chimp_genes.html

Many millions of years ago, humans and the living apes shared a common ancestor. We did not evolve FROM chimpanzees etc, both chimpanzees and humans evolved from a distant common ancestor millions of years ago, some other type of ape which is no longer living. [Of course, there were many different species in between, species leading to the chimpanzee on one hand and different species leading to the human on the other.] Chimpanzees did not 'fail' to become human, they succeeded in becoming chimpanzees and have been very successful as chimpanzees. It's like if we say that a seal failed to become a dog or something. The endpoint of evolution is not a magic 'perfect' human'

I believe they may have evolved too to what is it today. We may have come from a common specie and along the way we have evolve differently.

I guess that the evolutionists failed to consider this 'fact'. I mean there should be people with ape like features during the heavy labor, or some ape in a zoo bearing a half human child, the stuff of science fiction. I do know that God created Adam and Eve and we people are all their descendants. Strange how many other people still believe that people evolved from apes when the facts that men and women come from men and women are staring them right in the face.

It is strange isn't it;) I can not be convinced of it..although perhaps.. when I was younger I may have behaved like a little monkey;)...I remember this little old lady I use to take care of ..for 6 years.. she used to call me a little monkey..she always thought I was a kid and should go to bed at 6..that was fine with me..because that meant she would too:)

Absolutely no idea. I guess it depends on how religious you are. I remember telling my grandmother that I thought apes were a lot like humans and she blasted me saying 'we came from Adam and Eve! What a load of rubbish humans came from apes!' I dunno, I just look at their hands and fingers and eyes and it freaks me out how much I can relate to them. There's so many species and breeds and families, there could be an explanation for the old saying 'if we evolved from apes, why are they still running around'. I watched a doco once on people in some country who are less evolved than the rest of the world and that got me thinking that perhaps we weren't always as 'humsn' as we are now... the mind boggles. Interesting discussion!

Am not as religous as I use to be..but consider myself a person of faith. I believe in God and believe He created us before the animals.

When I was little, the elders told us since some apes were lazy, so they were unable to become human beings. They wanted to give us a lesson to be diligent. I think we are evolved from apes because we are so much alike. But there must be an important missing link needs to be found. As there must be a connection between apes and human beings.

Well;) if you want to be evolved from an ape..and believe it..I say more power to you ..I would say.. there is more then a missing link..there is no link..

I have a hard time believing some parts of the bible and some parts of evolution. Some parts I belive in both and others I dont. I do believe that we evolved from monkies but something happened along the way and some of them did not evolve.

It takes millions of years for ape-to-man evolution to occur, so i'm not sure if anyone would be around to witness such a thing happening. Also, take note that evolution only occurs for specific gene types and under certain environmental conditions. The conditions of which are very different from what we have today. Evolution i believe will no longer proceed from ape-to-humans anymore, but from the present humans to more highly developed humans.

So if it takes a million years for it to take place..why then have some of these monkeys and apes remained as they are.. I think that something is not right in all the theorizing the scientists are providing..I dont believe it and wont ever ever ever;)

Small problem in criticizing evolution for this--evolution does NOT say we evolved from apes. Evolution says that humand AND other ape species BOTH evolved from a COMMON ANCESTOR that is now extinct! That is why the other ape species are referred to as evolutionary "cousins" and not "parents"--we'd call them our "parents" if the evidence showed that we evolved from them. This "evolved from apes" nonsense is something creationists who don't know the first thing about evolution just plain made up! So you see, the 'problem' you see is actually not a problem at all. Creationists HAVE to give false definitions of what evolution says to make it easier to attack; otherwise they wouldn't be able to say anything. It's been proven time and time again that if they have no choice but to address the ACTUAL theory and what it ACTUALLY says with ACTUAL science, creationists don't have a leg to stand on. They need to do deceptive things like this to try and trick people into thinking that there is a problem where there isn't.
