although i am canadian, i get a lot of american tv channels and had a co-worker that was from detroit (i live in southern ontario) and i have heard stories about this infamous day...where did it get its name? why is it called that?
i guess our equivalent to that day is boxing day (dec 26th)(a stat holiday here in canada) but a lot of stores are open and people go crazy as all the stores mark down not only all their christmas stuff but almost all their winter stuff...the malls are crazy, but i dont think that anyone lines up at 4 am to get the bargains...why do you do that?

It's called black Friday because the stores probably make more than half of the years profit from Xmas shipping. They are hoping to make a lot of money so that they will be "in the black"(profit) as opposed to losing money "in the red" (loss)
