I became interested in travel when I was a child. I think it was going to France for the day and hearing people speak a different language. Then when I was at school we studied locations like Nigeria and Canada. I saved up the money from my paper round to go to Greece with my mum when I was 14. I went to the Netherlands with a friend When I was 17. Then I went all around Europe when I was 18. Australia had some kind of anniversary I really wanted to go there. So I wen there when I was 20. I like to see different landscapes, meet the local people, experience a different climate and see native wildlife. What makes you want to travel? Was there something that started you traveling? Which was the first country you went to?

Good topic. What makes me want ot travel is the curiosity to see new places and cultures...yeah i know that's the most banal answer possible. When i was a kid my parents brought me in all sorts of places, mostly in the americas. As a kid i have travelled in Costa Rica 3 times, once in Mexico, once in California. Then years later around the age of 14 i went to England on my own with an organized trip from an english woman my family knew at the time. I went a second time the year after. From then on i didnt travel almost anymore. I went to the Netherlands with friends and to Sweeden with one friend. The will to travel originates from those laces i have seen as a kid. Costa Rica has forever burned in my mind some incredible experiences.

Yes, I see what you mean. You had such a great adventure in Costa Rica. That is exactly the sort of experience that I love to have. Sometimes it is not the things you have organized that end up as much fun.

Many thanks for your great response. I am so pleased that Costa Rica captured a place in your mind as a country you had some incredible experiences. I would love to go there because so far I love Central America and I think that I would see much wildlife there. I sure going to England when you were just 14 was quite exciting.

i can tell you it was nowhere near what i have experienced in costa rica. england was like a learn english trip..if you know what i mean. we were a group of guys and kids. Costa rica was like the adventure of a lifetime, my parents knew this italian ambassador working there who was completely nuts. we didnt do the kind of tourist thing. we went into complete wildernes, we had a couple of jeeps and we just went all over the country. once we made this trip to some small town and there were no bridges to pass over the small rivers. so we were giong to other side we the jeeps. while eating in this place it rained down a tipical tropical rain. we stayed there until the rain stopeed a few hours after. but when we wanted to go back the last river we had trespassed was now a real river, with fallen TREES going down. So we couldnt get into it. then one pickup came from the other side of the river and successfully passed to our side..we figured that the ambassador's jeep was big enough to make it. but the jeep got stuck near the other side and we all had to get out from the car windows, carefully walk OVER the car and jump to the land just a couple of meters away. they got the jeep out of there only because it had the "winch", a kind of rope that you can attach to trees and will pull the car out. my dad and mother just had to stay on the other side because they had a small suzuki, wich would have never made the pass. believe it or not. but i exprienced quite a few of those experiences in costa rica, nothing so great has ever happened in my life ever since.

I love travelling also, but you started overseas travel at a far younger age than me. I became interested in travelling when a child, as my parents often took us on holidays, sometimes in our state & sometimes interstate. We would tow a caravan, or we would stay in a hired cabin, or even stay at relatives homes. I first travelling with a friend when I was 19 years of age. We went camping along the Great Ocean Road. When I was 20 years I went on my first over seas trip, to Hungary & Austria for 6 weeks. After that, the overseas travel bug did not leave me for many years. I have visited China, Singapore, Philippines, Bali, Hong Kong, US, Canada, England, Ireland & Scotland. I have not travelled overseas with my second husband, as we simply can't afford it with three kids. I have promised my daughter that in her gap year, before she starts university, I will take her on a Wild Life Safari in Africa.

It is wonderful that you are saving up to go on an African safari with your daughter during her gap year. I had a lovely safari experience in Kenya. On time the van stopped and everyone wondered why. There was the fur showing inside a tree above us. Wow! I looked in more detail and saw a leopard asleep. Australia is an excellent country to go caravaning around. The camping trip that you did along the Great Ocean Road must have been wonderful. It is superb that when you grew up you traveled to so many interesting countries.

I love to see other areas and places to see how the land is different, the culture of the people and all the good sites in the area. It is a great way to learn history and also find out about other areas of the country/world and learn about the people that live there.

Australia is a huge country so getting around takes some time. Two Japanese girls in Perth asked if there was train to Alice Springs. The booking clerk told them there was but it would be an incredibly long journey. He advised them to take a plane. Some of scenery is beautiful beaches, some of it is gorgeous mountains, there are many big cities and lots of outback. Its history is relatively young and it is interesting to meet the friendly people. Many thanks for your response.

Yes, traveling can be very relaxing. I like to unwind on tropical beaches. I would like to visit Japan in spring when blossom is on the trees. I would like to see the pretty fall of leaves in the USA and Canada during the autumn. In winter when it is cold I like to fly off somewhere warm.

Hearing different languages can be fascinating. In Bulgaria I had language difficulties and in Romania I could read some of the signs, for we use the same alphabet. Finding out history like about the second world war in the Europe is very interesting. It is great to meet people and see although poor they are happy. Many thanks for your excellent response.

Wow you have done a lot of travelling in your lifetime. The first country I travelled to was Australia and then to LA when I was 21. My husband and i actually moved to Samoa from New Zealand in 2000 and we are now living in the USA. Not sure where we will be heading next if we don't decide to settle here. My husband gets to travel a lot in his job and hopefully next year we get to go on a trip with him as well. We will be heading to Rarotonga for his sisters wedding in April so looking forward to that.

Being in new surroundings can be exciting. Meeting friendly people and finding out about a different culture can be enjoyable. France is the most popular country in the world in terms of tourist numbers I found out when I read a book about tourism. It is fantastic that you have seen many countries in Europe. I would love to go to Canada. Happy traveling.

My purpose for travelling and going to places are as the same as your's, I like to meet people and learn about their culture and local traditions. I believe that there's more to travel than waste money, we get educated and are informed of their traditions. I also love foods, which are only seen and served on that place. I guess here in my country (Philippines that is), we have different types of customs and traditions that varies from one place to the other. Different names and terminologies, but all are made to enrich and preserve their identities.

You are right. Travel is a great education. A person can read about seeing an African tribe but meeting them means so very much more. I have spent money on activities that I look back on now and I think it was worth it. I went para sailing in Fiji and saw the reef from the air. I have flown over the reef in the Maldives. The first experience made me feel like I was a bird flying.

I believe most people get the 'travel bug or itchy feet' the first time they travel. I know I'm adicted. Being Australian made it hard, as visiting foreign countries was so expensive, however I met a friend who had just returned from Europe, and he talked me into going with him in 18 months time. You needed to plan that far ahead in order to save enough money. Well to cut a long story short, he got married, but I still went alone. I was 25 at the time, and had a ball for the best part of a year. Now I live in Thailand, and travel whenever I have the chance. The first country was Germany, and I spoke not a word. It's amazing how we learn to communicate. I think the best way to learn about a country is to buy a map and get away from the tourist spots, and really mingle with the locals. Love it.

Thanks for your excellent response. Australia is a wonderful country however I was surprised that an airfare to the Far East was not much cheaper than an airfare to Europe. The nearest places would be New Zealand, Indonesia and the pacific islands like Fiji, all expensive places to fly to. It is great that you went alone and a ball for the best part of a year. Yes, it is funny communicating with hand gestures sometimes. I also love it when I get off the tourist spots and mix with the locals. However I have learned not to go alone to a deserted beach.

I haven't been able to travel that much, ever, but I've always wanted to. Ever since I was little, my feet just urged to move. It's a certain KIND of travel which calls to me. Like the nomads travel, gypsies, or some of my people (Native Americans) did in the old days and some still do. On foot, or by horse, wagon, or car. Camping where one can, under the open sky. It's not as much to do with the places themselves, but the ACT of traveling itself which calls to me. I'd like to travel across the country on foot, horse, or car..and camp where I can. Earnng money as I go, and only returning home when it's wisest or I tire of always moving.

I hope that you will travel a great deal and go to all the places that you want to. When I was in Australia I met many Australians traveling across their country by car or camper van. Then when they found a place they really liked they stopped off and worked for a while. Camping under the open sky sounds memorable.
