First SnowFall Do you put on winter tires and when?

I just had are first major snowfall of the year here in Montreal. I am sure some unsuspecting motorists got caught without winter tires. Here they are almost an essential. Have you put your winter tires on? Where are you from? Do you really need winter tires?
