My system is connected through a proxy server to internet. Is it safe to access confidential files which I have stored in net through this set up? Will the proxy save a copy in its own hard disk before allowing me to access it through? What is the level of privacy I can expect from the proxy connection?

If you are fearful of people accessing your confidential files, it is best to keep them on a USB hard disk and access the hard disk only when the computer is not connected to the Internet. Proxies are not 100% secure. Nothing is. * Windows is insecure. Linux is more Secure. Proxies are more secure still, and having a stand alone option as I have just described is more secure still. If you are truly paranoid, don't connect to the net at all with at least one computer.
