Does Poetry Help You To Express Yourself

When I was suffering with depression I found that expressing my thoughts, feelings and reflections was done through poetry, I actually found I was quite good at it, although at the time my poems were quite solemn, sometimes macabre and very 'saddening' it reflected the true me, the way I was, the way I had become and some people find that by writing, whether it's poems, verse, songs, a journal helps them in a small or sometimes big way to come to terms or deal with their depression. My favourite poem is entitled a Brand New Start which I wanted to share with people so that they can understand just what depression is and that there can be a light at the end of the seemingly large, scary tunnel Have a look and see what you think and if you like it please vote too So what do you use to express yourself? Do you write, do you sing, do you paint, or do you meditate? Please share. http://www.poetry.com/voteforme/poemvote1.asp?PID=12402770 Thank you

I think poetry is a beautiful way to share emotions and feelings with others. I began writing in my early teens. So that means I've been writing for around 35 years now. I think the things I am going through comes through in my writing.

Have you still kept your poetry from your teens? It's good to look back in that respect.

I had all of my poems from my teenage years up until about 5 years ago when they got lost in a move. I was so heart broken over that!

I really liked your poem, wolfie, and you show a lot of potential. I have had a lifelong interest in poetry, and still actively write, although not as much as I used to. Have you had anything published? I have had a couple published in anthologies. I miss the poetry of the girl named Ressie who used to be here. She did have a talent for it. Oh yes, I also rated your poem while I was there. I will try and find the link to my latest and post it here on myLot.

Thank you my dear friend, no I have never had anything published, a lot of sites want you to pay them! Besides I didn't do it for the money, it has power and passion for me and that's all that counts. Thank you for rating, appreciated x

When I was diagnosed with several anxiety problems and depression when I was younger that's when I really found all the inspiration for the poetry occur. I used to write poetry when I was younger, but when I reached my darkest moments, poetry really helped me express myself in ways that talking could not. I keep all of my poetry in a wire bound notebook and that's usually where it stays. Sometimes I post it in my personal journal but not always.

Do you keep your work private and your journals hidden? Because I used to write a journal but my ex found it and read it and since then I stopped writing, even tho we split up, I can't write in a journal any more. Thanks for your response, appreciated.

Hi wolfie, Any time I am in the mood to write about how I feel and my thoughts it always comes out a poem. I really enjoyed reading yours, very well done! I am bi-polar so I can relate with how it feels to be down in the dumps. I am really happy to hear that you are doing better, feeling better, and looking great! Love the new pic! Luv & Hugzz, PurpleTeddyBear.

When I get depressed I talk to my children. Not about my depression but to ask what's going on in their lives and share what is happening in mine. Not the bad stuff, because I don't want to burden my children with my problems, but the good stuff. They just make me feel better, no knowingly, by sharing their lives with me. I also keep a journal to write down the bad stuff. then I go back when I am feeling better, and read what I wrote. It helps me to realize I can get over the little bad things in life. I got over it since I wrote it down! I don't write poems or sing, I have a terrible voice. I like to listen to music though, and this helps me to calm myself. I do knit and sometimes I do that to calm down. What I really need is a part time job, to get out of the house and have a life without my husband. Something for just me.

Wow you've jumped from a 9 to a 10 star, well deserved, thanks for voting. It's not my site I just got my poem on there. Thanks for your response, I too have a terrible voice but it don't stop me singing, just stops people from being in the same room as me when I do LOL!

Thanks for the praise on my star. Most people don't notice this. It is nice of you to notice. I actually posted a discussion about my star when I hit the 100 post mark and you responded to it. I'm sorry to say that mylot has deleted that discussion. I don't know why. I guess I broke some rule and someone must of reported me as abuse.

I believe taht there are people who express themselves beautifully by writing a poem. i also write poems but I keep it to myself. I have made a few since when i was a child. And I am keeping them in my drawer. I guess there are times that we are in a deep state of am emotion where we are inspired to make a poem...
