What is the motive of these virus-makers?

I found that my notebook had no sound when i turned it on. what happend? Finally,i have got the problem, my sound card was invaded by some kind of virus.It took me 1 hour to fix my notebook.so, i am so curious about the motive of these virus-makers.what in the world do they want to do? for fun or proving themself, or other intentions?
