There is a big whoop-la over the taser gun which police use to protect themselves in potentially violent situation. Question is tasers really that bad? Do people provoke the police with attitude until the police are forced to uses the taser? If the tasers guns are removed what should be put in its place? How should the police protect themselves from violent offenders? Opinions please. Have a good day.

Tasers are great, the problem that has arisen is the fact that they aren't lethal. Many cops are far too eager to taser now in situations they would never have dreamed of drawing their pistols in the past. I think the best solution is more training by local departments, not only in the proper use of a taser but in anger management, as well. I also believe better background checks should be done on police officers and thorough mental evaluations should be done.Is there really a need for a 250 pound male cop to taser a 70 year old female weighing less than 150? Is it truely justifiable for a cop to taser a pregnant woman when 2 other officers are present? Can't these officers handle physically restraining problem individuals and if not, why are they officers to start with? I've heard of far too many cases all over the U.S. like these cases where the officers were clearly in control of the situation and simply used their tasers apparently out of anger and or spite.
