E-book versus Real Book?

Do you prefer to read an e-book or a physical real book? For me, it really depends on my mood at the time. But I have heard some of my friends say that they prefer to read and be able to feel the book, than to stare at the screen which sort of remind them of work. What about you?

I prefer a physical book - you have a lot more flexibility about where to read an actual book than you do an e-book. However, as I am currently working in a foreign country with no English bookstores, at the moment e-books are my only options. I have to say that I'm grateful that they exist, otherwise I would go crazy having no reading material. However, it does mean that instead of curling up on the couch or in bed on a cold winters day, I have to sit in the study at the computer to read.

I totally understand that loss feeling. There was a time when I travelled a lot from one non English speaking country to another and it was so hard to find an English bookstore. The first instance I found one, I bought close to a dozen books at one go.

Absolutely, a physical book for reading. There is just something absolutely addictive in having to physically turn a page. You can take a book anywhere. I know, I know, laptops. But have you ever tried to lie down under the covers with a laptop? Or in a tent? It really doesn't work. Reading isn't just about reading the words, it's about loosing yourself in them. Hard to do that onscreen.

Indeed, we often forget that it is more than just reading the words. The other senses do have a part in reading as an activity too. The feel of the pages and the smell of an old or new book...

reading a ebook is same for me as reading regular books but the glare from the screen while reading e-books is a negative point. the regular books can also strain eyes but u can freely move to a well lit point in a room.

Yup..the glare is definitely a minus point for me, but those monitor shields are a great help. Reading e-books does allow me to read without switching on the lights at night and do other things online as well like trading and chatting when I need to. :-)

I definitely prefer a real physical book. Ebooks just don't cut as I don't like to read long chunks of information off my computer screen. But recently that Amazon Kindle just came on and it is supposed to provide a similar reading experience to that of a real book. Granted that the technology is not new but kindle is better due to various reasons. It's a pity there are too few books converted to digital format and that many things are restricted to the USA, else I would drool over getting a kindle in my dreams.:P

i like both because both are valuable things. i prefer a real book because we can read the real book at any time even if we donot have a internet.

They are both valuable indeed. But reading an e-book does not necessarily mean you have to be online. You can purchase a copy of the ebook and have it saved on your computer too. That allows you to read at your own leisure or even on your palm or PDA.

e-books are meant for demonstration purpose not for reading them as a regular book. that why electronic copies of popular books are provided free of charge.

Not really, pulchritudinous. Ebook is just the digital format. It has nothing to do with it being "demonstrative" or what. :P

Would you care to share where you usually find free ebooks online? Cos I usually have a hard time finding a full version of popular books online, more so if they are free of charge. Would appreciate your sharing. Thanks.

Real book is something that is a very classic example. and more savings than using an ebook that requires energy to do so.. same quality and quantity and contents the difference is books are always there..internet.. who knows???

I prefer real books, hands down. Staring at a screen for hours is not the same as stretching out on the couch, under a blanket with a bowl of popcorn on my lap. I like to get comfortable when I am reading, lie down in bed, curl up under a blanket.

That definitely sounds like a really comfortable and relaxing position you adopt for reading. Reading your comment makes me want to do so right now!

I prefer a physical real book because it is a real book and e-book is sometimes hard to find in the net. But sometimes, if I cannot find the book, then I would have to find an e-book. Real book because I do not need to print it, and sometimes the print and the drawings are in color. Unlike in e-book, I have to print the e-book, and what if I do not have a colored printer, then it will a big disadvantage for me. And the cost of the ink and binding is too expensive.

Interesting to know that you actually print out your ebooks to read them. I thought most people would normally read ebooks on screen as oppose to printing them out and read them like a real book. That sounds like a lot of work to me.
