If they charged you a brokerage fee you are getting a package from another country. In case you didn't know nobody can transport a package across a border if they are not a broker. UPS is not a broker, UPS Brokerage is their broker. What exactly did you receive? You have to pay duties and taxes for anything coming from a foreign country. The shipping company ie. UPS, FedEx does not know how much taxes will be charged on the item you are shipping. Therefore YOU must pay those taxes unless the shipper has an account with the company and specified to charge those fees to their account. If you bought something worth $54 dollars but the Canadian government evaluates it at a value of $500 you will pay taxes on $500. If you want more details visit customs canada website and there is a list of all items that have free entry into Canada. Anything not on that list YOU will have to pay those taxes. If they are not taxes but actual brokerage fees the only company I ship with is FedEx air. FedEx is a broker and the service is included in their air price (not ground). If you ship with UPS or FedEx ground you will have to pay them brokerage fees or get your own independent broker. Hope that helps, P.S. anyone trying to sue them is going to loose they are not cheating you.

Maximum value for a gift is $100. If your shipping a laptop and you say it's a gift they will still charge you taxes on the value of the laptop. If you lie about what you are shipping there's a good chance they catch it and then you'll loose it.

I can only figure that the difference is that your purchasing from big companies when you don't get charged. They usually have free shipping and they tell the delivery service to charge their accounts with any fees. When you are sending between individuals (Ebay)the person selling does not tell the companies to charge them for these fees and often they don't even have an account to do this. Like in your case, the seller won't even think about those fees and they are not told about them because they are not the ones who will be charged. Once again I can only suggest to ship it FedEx air (not ground)where all brokerage fees are included. If you are receiving everything for the same price and a $5 charge with government post then just use that.
