How does sugar alcohol on a label as an ingredient compute for diabetics?

I was given a dessert by someone because it had "no sugar". I just read the label and it may have no sugar - but it has 22 grams of sugar alcohol. How does this "count" if you are serving to someone diabetic? Should it be avoided or does it not really metabolize as sugar?
