I would say by their forth album many groups go bad, not all definately, but a lot seem to descend at this mark. It is at this point in many band or solo artist's careers that they think everything they do is awesome and they want to expand and explore their music talents. It usually does not translate well to the fans. A big part of the problem is at this point after their initial success, they are surrounded by "yes" men who don't constructively criticize the music, they just agree and go along for the ride. Another problem is alot of the initial passion, pain, rage or emotion that defined their music is removed from their life at this point. They got the cash in the bank, a love interest, the nice house, cars etc. Theres not a lot of the contributing influences going on anymore. It is at this point I think a lot of musician's "jump the shark". Share your thoughts on the subject.

Quite often, a band or artist changes its sound. Sometimes, it works, & other times it doesn't. Many things cause this. Sometimes, it's personnel changes, such as a band's singer being replaced. That often leads to killing a band's sound. For some bands that were not known, this helped. Other times, it hurt.
Other times, it can also be a change in the record label, but that almost always is what a band needs to be just a band to a well-known band. Quite often, the overall sound of a band changes because of demands from some idiotic record company executive demanding that a certain something gets changed or they would refuse to release the record. Many bands fell victim to it, & unfortunately, the album does not sell.
