I want to make my own advent calendar for my children, as the ones in the shops are very expensive, and I think it would be much nicer to have a Home made one....
I love being crafty but I need some insiration...
Any and all ideas welcome and very much appreciated... Thank you

I had a Christmas Advent Calender a few years ago, I will try to describe it for you, it was and actual street and all the windows of the houses had an extra cardboard over it with the dau nimber on it and when you opened it it was like looking inside the room, the calender was made in three, one long back part and two smaller ones that was the size of the backpart but in two if that sounds sensible so when opened it was free standing...I went to town on this with my glitter, I love anything that glitters, I glittered all the snow on the roof and window ledges and on the trees and some of the Christmas trees in the windows... I am sure you could make a lovely calender for your family...I hope we get to see a photo of it when you finish it...

Use matchboxes or similar thin card constructions to build a 'chest of drawers', decorate each drawer with a date and images to taste and fill each one with a treat, a puzzle clue or whatever takes your fancy. That works really well.

do you sew? if you do, you can purchase felt relatively cheaply at dollar stores and you can cut out a tree and sew little pockets on it for each day.
also what about little boxes for each day - these can be stacked (although they should have lids) did you look on the internet for ideas?

What do you like to work in? Wood? Paper? Cloth?
Part of an advent calandar is the surprise of what is under each new day. I think they're more fun if you make one for someone and that person makes one for you. Then you exchange it.
Here's ideas for a "how to":
Start with a piece of cardboard, pictures from magazines, and a calendar page. Measure the squares on the calendar page. Draw lines or photocopy the calandar page. Cut out pictures that fit or color copy reduced after you cut them out. Glue one picture per date onto the cardboard/cardboard with calender page. Now cut the top calendar so that you can fold each date down to reveal what is underneath or you could just cut it off.
Some people make wooden or cloth covers that can be reused each year. If you know what the person likes, then you can find really neat pictures that will make the other person smile. Like I have one friend who likes angels, a relative who likes candles, etc. My husband would probably like power tools (not very religious, but neither is he). The 25th could be a cute little baby or a parents and baby scene, there are so many ways to make an advent calendar really neat. If I made one this year for next year, with memory, I would be surprised. Take care and neat topic!
