What is the point of smoking hookah?

Although I've only had the chance to smoke hookah once, I'm not quite sure of its actual purpose. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't have the same effects as regular tobacco or marijuana. But, what is the point of smoking it? Is it just for socialization? Or is there a desirable physical effect?
