What is the youngest age you have ever know a child to read at. I am not talking about from memorization. I mean where a child actually gets a childs book and reads the whole thing alone. I just thought that this would be an interesting discussion, because I seen on the television a commercial for hooked on phonics, and the mother said the child was 4, I think. And he was reading a book very clearly, without any troubles.

I hate that commercial. It makes parents feel insecure if their chilren aren't reading at that age. We have enough people making us think something is wrong with our kids if they are too skinny, too chubby, too active, too laid back, too loud, too quiet....
Yes it is possible for 4 year olds to read and there's nothing wrong with that if they want to but there's also nothing wrong with children learning to read at the more average age of 5-6.

Okay, that makes me feel better with the 2 posts I have gotten off of this. I was a little worried that my 4 year old was behind. Lol. She know her letters and numbers. But she can not read. So I felt really bad.

That commercial is ridiculous and feeds parents' worries that their child will be behind their peers if they do not get them a tutor or if they are not reading when they enter kindergarten. The children like the one in the commercial are being pushed into something that is unnatural for them. It is very rare for a child to have the interest and ability to read at that age. The fact is, people who push their children to learn earlier and earlier don't realize that it gives them no real advantage over their peers and it actually deprives them of some very valuable skills, such as creativity and problem solving.
