A few years back I had a copy editor read one of my manuscripts. One of the first things she had me do was to purchase a copy of "Writing for Story" by Jon Franklin. I find that it's one of the best formulas for writing a story. He has won two pulitzer prizes and knows how to put in plain english advice that will help any writer. So if you feel that your writing is lacking something pick up a copy of his book. I reread it about every six months just to give myself a reminder of the direction my writing should take.

Hi... I never knew that there were such books which might help u in writing too! Great! But not for me... thanks for your advice but...I dont give it damn... If you have that talent you will surely write a good story and if not....No one on Earth can help you... Good writer do existed even before any such book published... So I dont think that such books can help you in great sense.... But yes...they might give you some technical advice, some experts touch what so ever....But not more than that... thats my views...

I've read a couple of the HOW TO books on writing and to some extent most say the same things. "Focus on your story and your characters and make it compelling for the reader." Or if it is non-fiction "Stick to the facts or make the book useful". I'm working on a self-help book right now, hopefully I'll actually finish it. Most of the time I have a hard time getting the whole thing written because the process takes so long and I already know the story in my head so it loses it's appeal and freshness to me. So I'm trying with my next fiction story to not outline at all and just let it flow and maybe that will help. Good luck to everyone. and BTW: If someone laughs at your work, and it is not a comedy, you don't need their advice.

Exactly! Is this your first book? The self-help? Good luck on finishing it. I am just going to start my third....a fiction and working on another. The last one I am using an outline. Hope you writing goes well!
