Why do some cats hate humans?

Once very long ago, while I was visiting a friends home, her cat attacked me and scratched my arm. Apparently, her cranky cat didn't like anyone. She didn't get along with strangers or family members. But, they didn't want to get rid of her for sentimental reasons. Apparently, years before, she'd been an adorable kitten. I could never understand that type of logic. How do you live with a cat that hates humans? Wouldn't you just be miserable?
I suppose if the cat were a loner or never came out, then it might be possible to co-exist with a cat that was perpetually cranky. But, most likely, me and the cranky cat would have a couple spats, before she found her new home outdoors. Don't get me wrong. I love cats! I have three of them (so far). And, I don't plan on getting rid of any of them, despite their perpetually stinky attitudes. I'm just kidding. My cats are sweethearts. But, I would have much more difficulty getting along with them, if they were people haters.
What do you think? Could you live with a cat that did not like being around humans?

Hello dear beauty queen. I think that it might be the reason that the cat had just moved into a new place and it had not made herself adjusted to the new surroundings before she oculd get well with humans. Or maybe the cat had just got neutered, which made her so unfriendly to humans? So this story of the cat took place very long ago. How is the cat now, please? Is she frinedly to people now or does she like humans now? Thanks for your discussion.

Actually cats that are afraid of us..tend to do this for their self defense..sometimes out of fear that you might stel her kittens..best way to get rid of this is being familiar to the cat in sometime..it becomes close with you..

Well, my sister had a cat named Pepe for nearly 20 years that she raised from a baby kitten. THAT cat hated EVERYONE except my sister's boyfriend. Pepe also kept two large dogs at bay. He would never let me pet him.
I read somewhere that cats are like humans in this respect. They like and dislike who they want and there's not much that you can do about it. I can't even tell you how many people I disliked at first sight.

I have too many children in and out of my home..there is NO way that I would tolerate a cat that attacked a human for no apparent reason...
I find it hard to believe that this cat was once a sweet adorable kitty though and then, for no reason, became a people-hater...there is no logic in that...lol
Blessed be.
