Do you use an old computer to connect to the Internet?

For the first two years that I was on the Internet, I had to use a very old computer. My computer was so old, that it was still using Windows 98. Does anyone remember that dinosaur piece of software? What a monstrosity! It was super slow and kept freezing up. And, even though, I was able to get onto the Internet with a very old copy of AOL 6.0, dial-up, I didn't fully enjoy the Internet, until I got my current computer. Actually my current computer is not new at all. In fact, it was probably made in 2002 or earlier. But, compared to my first stone age computer, it works just fine. And, with broadband, it runs pretty fast. I think it's been running a little slow lately, because I junked it up with downloads and software. But, I can easily delete all that stuff. Maybe we'll upgrade computers this Christmas. I can dream anyway! Do you use an old computer? Do you think that it slows down your connection to the Internet?

Hello beauty queen. I have an old laptop, which is now six years old, but I like it very much as it is my first laptop and is still working well. I consider my laptop as my best friend as I have to use it a lot every day when I am off work and I also use it to prepare my lessons and many other things, so helpful to me. I am thinking of getting a new one in a couple of years before I will get a new one. Thanks for your discussion.

It is always a happy time to chat with friends online. Like you, I have a very old computer. It was made six or seven years ago. I cannot be sure, though. But, it is much faster than most of my previous computers. I was so lucky to get this computer for $150 used at a local second hand pawn shop. $150 is not much money here. So, that was a real deal. I have always thought of buying a laptop. I am sure that it would help me with my writing. But, I am sure that my child would insist upon using the lap top as well. And, she is not old enough to understand how delicate electronics can be, especially computers. Thanks for dropping by, as always. Best wishes on finding the next computer of your dreams. And, hopefully it will serve you just as well as your present one does. Be well. Have a good day.

Well... you don't know what an old computer is... My first computer in 1994 was a very old 286 IBM with a 20Mb hard disk and 2Mb of memory. In 1996 I bought a new 486 with Windows 95. In April 1997... I connected to the internet with a 14.4kbps modem... and it was wonderful. In 1999 I bought a Pentium II 350 with Windows 98 and used it until 2005. I did put Windows XP on it in 2004. I still have that computer and it is still doing the job... even so it is slow. Now I am using a second hand 2001 Pentium IV 1750Ghz with Windows XP and 512Mb of Ram. I live in the bush (no broadband) and the best my ISP can provide me with... is dial up 26.4kbps. But somehow I manage... which just go to prove the point that the people of today are taking a lot for granted. Having experienced all the aboves makes me appreciate what we have today.

I started out with a VIC20 with a tape drive. Then I moved to an Apple 2. This was back in the eighties. I definitely understand what you are saying. I am glad that I can afford better equipment than I started out with, though I do seem to collect old computers.

will if you are choosing the Internet connection on the same computer that I don't know whether the speed of the computer effects of computer and browsing speed but less if you are shading the net connection from that computer to any other then I can guarantee you it will definitely heard the speed. I yet faced this problem myself previously I tried and aimed TK six machine acting as my server end at that time I was facing some major speed problems in my Internet connection although I'm using a broadband to 256 kb plan. recently upgraded my server to a quota would you and now I have seen a major change in my downloading speed and myself in speed and this means that the speed of your computer does help when your computers are on lan

My hats off to you, for giving that a try! Very noble indeed. I would still be using something similar if my spouse hadn't found my subsequent computers at pawn shops for a few hundred dollars each. We can't really afford the thousand dollar computers. So, I guess I'm really lucky. Fingers crossed. Knock on wood. And, all that jazz.

Hi All! This is my seventh post in mylot discussions, and here goes . . . Yes I am still using an old computer to connect to the Internet. It is old as this is the same machine I am using since 2002. An AMD coupled with 256MBs of RAM. Still does the job, and Internet doesn't seem slow. Maybe it is because I am on broadband? And not to mention I am using Linux on this dinosaur? :) Yes I still remember Windows 98. That was the last Windows I installed on my machine. After Windows 98, I gave Linux a try, and I am happy with it. So far, so good. :)

I bought an new computer just last year andmy boyfriend pc is maybe 2 years old. The computer I was using before that was my mom computer and it was kinda slow, but it was ok for me. But when my boyfriend bought his new pc, I found my pc was too slow lol So I decide to buy a new one last year during the boxing day :) It's still not the best if I want to buy new game, but it's enough for me to do everything else I need to do.

I remember Windows 98...and dial up...gosh, I hope that I never have to deal with that again...LOL I have 2 computers...a lap top made in 2000 and a desk top that we bought last year...although the desk top is much quicker...I prefer the lap top...I usually sit in the living room on my couch and do my internet projects...that way I am in the same room with the others in the family...if I used the desk top...I would have to be in the bedroom away from flow of the house...I do not think that I would like that very well...the one in my room is where my son frequently plays his computer games...lol Blessed be.

I have one desktop and two laptops at home. The desktop is very old. Sometimes I will still use it to connect to the internet. But I get used to the laptop because it is faster, so I really think the desktop is very slow to run the programs.

Yeah I had a Commodore 64 and I thought it was Wonderful. I could program it to make a little ball bounce all around the screen. I'd sit there for hours, mesmerized, watching that ball. Then my wife threatened me with divorce if I didn't stop watching that thing. She said my eyes kept going back and forth even as she Talked with me. Internet you say! Whats that?

Do you want to have a big laugh? I have to use windows 98 in my computer at work. It's because they don't want to buy any new windows licences, and of course they do not use pirate software, so we just have dinosaurs in there!! Help me!!

I have a windows 98. I've had it since 1999. I just got a laptop about a month and a half ago and it has Vista. My computer at work has Windows XP. I think it's funny that you say "my computer is so old" when you got rid of it by 2002. By that point I would have considered it old, but not "so old". I love my Windows 98. I still use it for a lot of things, but I'm on my laptop more, not cause it's updated, just cause it's a laptop rather than a desktop and it's more convenient. The computer itself isn't what slows down your internet connection. Your internet connection is the same speed whether it's an old computer or a new computer. It's the computer itself that's slow.

hmm nope, i use a fairly new computer. bought my laptop sometime last year. it's ok to be using an old computer, just as long as you can get your stuff done and that it doesn't give you problems hehe. anyways i hope you'll be able to get a new computer soon, nonetheless! :)

I still have a computer with Windows 98 on it, but I use it solely for word processing. The current computer that I use to connect with the internet has XP on it. I am not planning on upgrading to Vista anytime in the near future. I think that I have computers with every version of Windows on them, except for Millenium edition (we killed the computer that had that version of Windows on it). I hang onto old computers, just in case. For my writing, not being able to afford a true laptop, I recently brought a NEO for 230 dollars (that includes the shipping costs) from Alphasmart. It is a keyboard with a simple word processing program on it. I am using it for rough drafts which I then transfer to the computer and revise using Word. The NEO is pretty durable, being designed for use in grade schools. And in my case, being a dedicated word processor, it helps keep me off the internet. You know me, I get distracted easily.

I tried before, but I gave up the next day.I could hardly open a whole page on the Internet. And when the messages wre sent to my computer,I could only wait for a momnet if I wanted to read it.When I sent the messages away my computer would stop working at the moment.I couldn;t bear it.
