I removed the straps and padding from my son's old carseat and brought it to our local transfer station. I removed the straps to make sure no one could use it. It was recalled, after I stopped using it, so I wanted to make sure no one would take it and use it. You should never use a second hand carseat. You never know how old it is or whether it has been recalled or in an accident. Though they can be quite expensive, it is necessary to buy new. The most expensive is not always the best. You get charged more for nice upholstery like suede, but you don't really need that- it's just going to have food and stuff spilled on it anyway. As long as it is comfortable and safe it is fine- you don't need all the extras.

Right, she brought it home to you, with the intention of you using it, I assume. Otherwise, why bother bringing it. At any rate, whether you buy or are given a carseat, if it is used you shouldn't use it. A transfer station is where you bring trash and recyclables that your regualar garbage service won't take, like paint cans, furniture, appliances and other big stuff. There is often an area for things that are still usable, like furniture, that people can take for free. That is why I took the straps off, so no one could use it. Sometimes there is a charge for using these places, and you have to be a resident of the town or county. The charge for mine is $5 for a year- a great price considering what it would cost to have stuff removed.

i havnt presonally had this experiance though you can approach this in 3 ways. -if the seat doesnt look damaged and your child isnt getting sores or anything then keep it -if it does look damaged then or you want to play safe then sell it on like she did to you. -if you dont want to sell it then dispose of it and purchase one from a propper shop, to avoid the same thing happening again best regards, dan

If you didnt see above in my posts when a car seat expires it can shatter if in a crash... i am not ganna put my daughter in it and take the chance...Nor will i put anyone elses kids in danger by giving it to them... and if i put it in the trssh someone is bound to take it out..and again im not gana put no one elses child in danger...that was the q, since you shouldnt do either.. what should u do with it then?...they say bust itup so none can use it but how can i bust it up? im not that strong.lol

I throw them out or have my husband burn them. I would never give someone one that was expired. I wofeel bad if they wrecked and the child got hurt. I have to check my boys booster seats and see what the date is on them. They are only 2 years old and I hope they dont expire soon. Did you know that if a carseat is in a car wreck it has to be thrown out?? A cop friend of ours told us this when my husband wrecked our van. He wasnt hurt to bad. The car seats flew to the back of the van. The cop checked them out for us and said we needed new ones. Everyone at my husbands work pitched in and bought us two new ones!! God bless them!

Since my oldest is almost 12 and is followed by a sibling every 2-2 1/2 years, I have had plenty of car seats expire. We just tucked them away until we could haul them off to the dump...a few were left without their straps and other important pieces in cars going for scrap. S/o's mom keeps getting "extras" from yard sales...the most recent one that she got as a replacement for one of our that was in a wreck had a manufacture date of 1992! I just keep "forgetting" hers in the other vehicle and switch our good ones back and forth, eventually she forgets she bought one and it "disappears". Don't ask why she just won't listen about them expiring...

My best suggestion is to give to give it to someone who has children that play with the dolls. A friend of mine has two little girls and the older one loves dolls and was forever putting her dolls in her carseat (just like mommy does) and so when the younger one was born she was too big for the carseat they had bought so the mom gave it to the older girl for her dolls...it worked out great. MERRY CHRISTMAS!! **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I know I've heard if a carseat is even in a minor accident to get rid of it because it might not be realiable in another accident. I am somewhat worried though because I know a decent amount of people (including a few relatives who don't believe me) who continue to buy carseats from resale shops to get them cheaper.

Good that you informed all of us about this. I did not know any thing about expiry of carseats. Some of the Indians use it for lifelong. Now it is shocking to hear the repercussions of expired carseats. Thanks and may your tribe grow.

Carseat Safety! - Carseat, carseats expire
Carseats usually expire about 6 years after they are manufactured. Many people don't know this. I was dumb founded when I found out. You think that they would write that in BIG bold letters on the box somewhere, lol. But, they don't. Great discussion!

That's a good question, I don't know what to do with them when they expire. I sold my oldest son's carseat b/c it would expire before we have another child in a few years.. So I sold it at a consignment shop, so someone else can use it for two years.. They ought to have a recycling program set up, where you can bring in old carseats, they could save all the reusable parts (the fabric, and straps etc.) and then use the plastic for something else.. I'm sure many people just throw them in the trash. When our youngest turns two we'll prob. sell his car seat as well as we have built in carseats in our van, (they are built into the seats, for 2 years and up) So, we won't have to worry about a seat for him after that.

Hi Wifey, Well you just taught me some information that I didnt know! I would have never thuoght that they expired, I just thought kids outgrew them! Makes perfect sense though, the plastic can get old and weak from sun damage or cold weather damage. I dont have to worry abou that, I dont have any kids! lol Dont plan on having any either, but this bit of information might come in handy and I can pass it along to someone else! Bay Lay Gray xx

I have never had a carseat expire on me. I did not know that they did expire. I knew you were not supposed to use them if they had been in an accident, but not about the expiring part. It does make sense though. My daughter is 7 years younger than my son, so if I had kept his it would have been expired by the time she came around.

What if it has been stored in your house and not exposed to the elements should you still go by the expiration date?

It still goes outside when its cold and when it hot... it is not safe...u drive your kid where they need to go in the winter right?..and then in the summer to?..so either way its been exposed.. its not dafe in my eyes.

Wow I am really glad that you posted this because I did not realize that they expire! Wow! I think I need to go check my sons seat out! I passed it down from my 6 year old to my now 2 year old and so I wonder if I should buy a new one! I just assumed since I had never been in an accident with it it would be fine! Again Wow!
