Apparently this lady faces rather harsh sentences for innocently allowing a teddy bear to be named Muhammed.
This teacher taught a class of 7 years olds and in an attempt to teach them about voting, let them vote on a name for the teddy bear. They voted Muhammed and parents complained. Now she is in prison, facing lashes etc.
Time for a reality check methinks?

We have all heard about the rape victim in Saudi who was sentenced to 200 lashes for being in a car with an unauthorized male. Somehow, I think that barbarity is a greater affront to God.

Well, this woman is a teacher and is too stupid to realise that this is likely to cause offence in a Muslim country. Either she is too stupid to be a teacher or a trouble maker. It is also another example of intolerance and barbarity in Muslim countries.

I doubt she is a trouble maker - afterall she was working as a teacher in one of the poorest countries in the world, probably for very little money if not for free. Trouble makers are generally not so altruistic.
As for being stupid - well some very well intentioned if naive people make the mistake of assuming the some Muslims are rational. I don't believe she was stupid, just a woman trying to teach a classroom full of kids about voting in a Islamic country. that was probably her mistake...
It never ceases to amaze me how easily these morons take offense.

I am fully in favour of the "when in Rome" mode. However there is no evidence to suggest that Ms Gibbons did something that was in contravention of any law, custom or sensibility. It seems that the Sudanese government are simply trying to stir up anti-Western sentiment in their own people whilst simultaneously looking for an excuse to boot aid workers out probably. This is the same government that is responsible for genocide against many of its own people, the less aid workers and international agencies are present in Sudan, the less scrutiny they come under.

As I understand it, an understanding I admit that is far from perfect, she broke a law against denigrating the name of Muhammed.

In fairness, some British Muslim spokesmen have been condemning it

To be honest I am not shocked just that I cant believe that there is a law against naming a teddy bear like that. I mean for crying out loud if someone here in the USA wanted to name ateddy bear Jesus then so be it. To me it means nothing but a name.
