Potatoes

I just learned a new way of cooking potatoes. My mother found this out from my sister and told me. When you are boiling your potatoes just add a tablespoon of margerine to the water and put a lid on the pot. With the margerine the water will not boil over. I tried it, and it works. But you have to leave the lid just open a little bit. You can actually cook the potatoes on high. You don't have to turn the element down. Plus the margerine helps make the potatoes smooth and yummy. After all, we usually put margerine on our potatoes, anyways, when mashing them or just eating them in cubes. Try it, it works.

Ewwwww I hate boiled potatoes! My ex used to feed me bleeding boiled potatoes EVERY night, I got that sick of them, that I actually threw the potatoes on the floor in disgust! It has put me off boiled potatoes for life. Plus I can't eat margerine. I prefer my potatoes in jackets done in the oven, with grated cheese or coleslaw poured onto them. More healthier too!

Coleslaw huh? Well what do you mean by coleslaw Wolfie? Shredded cabbage with red cabbage, carrots and some sort of dressing to it? That might be good and my next chance Im going to try it out! Bay xx

Yes you've got it, shredded cabbage, onion and carrots in mayonnaise, delicious and even better with cheese in it, although bad for the old waistline! Not that I need to worry x

I have heard about this tip before. I am going to try it tonight when I boil my potatoes for mashed potatoes. My ex mother-in-law uses a wooden spoon to prop her lid open and that works also. Thank you so much for reminding me of this to try.

I will have to try that next time I boil potatoes. I am always boiling over the pot when I am cooking mine. I get distracted and forget to watch it. Thank you for sharing that tip.

I will try this some time, but I never buy margarine, only real butter. In my country the transfats are still allowed and they could be used in some margarines, not healthy at all. So for cooking real butter is better and also tastes great. Together with cold pressed vegetable oils it is ok, the oils balance the fats as long as they are not heated. You can pour them on the food when it is already on the plate. But why not save a little electricity and turn the heat down a bit, the potatoes will get cooked anyway..!:)

I should try it some time. We do not eat potatoes that much unless we are having pork chops. Most of the time, we have either rice, macaroni, or spaghetti. I do not like margarine unless it it the soft kind with no transfat. I guess it is the same as adding oil to water in which you boil spaghetti in, so I was wondering instead of margarine, if you could use oil or butter instead. It is worth a try. So I should remember next time we have pork chops.

This sounds great, I will certainly have to try it. My family eats a lot of potatoes, whether it be mashed or boiled, we are always eating potatoes. I also seem to have a mess from the water boiling over quiet often..and it makes such a mess on the glass top stove I have. Thanks for the tip, I will certainly remember this and use it next time I cook potatoes, which I am sure will be in a day or two.

Thanks for the tip Chrislotz! I love potatos, and I eat them many ways. I must say that home made mashed potatos are my favorite! Im eating some left overs from dinner on Sunday right now! lol I have a problem with putting way too much butter on them, but I cant help it. It does make them taste so so good. Im a salt freak when it comes to mashed and baked ones, as well as some sour cream. Do I sound like a walking cholesterol ball or what? LOL Bay Lay Gray xx
