Bees make silk. They cocoon their babies in silk in their little wax chambers to secure them snug and tight.

They aren't the only surprising animal that makes silk. Ants and wasps also secure their young in silk.
*
Scientists recently found this out and decoded the DNA of this surprisingly strong stuff.

I found out this info on

Hello dear craftycorner. I didn't know that bees make silk to protect their new babies. It is interesting to know that. Thanks for the information and the link. Happy posting, dear friend.

The silk apparently acts as a strong backup to the wax.

WEll Crafty I've been keeping bees for 30 years and have never seen any bee silk yet. Last year we melted down and rendered 3000 lbs of beeswax honeycomb. After we took the wax from the combs we threw what was left in the swamp. And we never once saw one piece, or one iota, of silk. Not one thread! If bees can make silk you can fly to the moon. so go ahead and get started!

OK, I'm just reporting what I heard...and there is the link posted where I heard it from too. If this is bogus, it's the website that's pulling one. Not me LOL!
